way they whipped him and shocked him…” My voice trailed off as I choked back a tear. I didn’t want to start crying because I knew that if I started, I wouldn’t stop. Fran reached for my hand. I looked at her and smiled.
“We couldn’t have gotten out of there without your help, you know.”
Fran shrugged.
“Honestly it was a long shot. I wasn’t sure that a mini saw would get you out of a fortress, but I had to try,” she said. “Besides, Vincent is my brother. He is after all the only sibling I got in this world.”
“Well, lucky for us, all we needed was that mini saw,” I said. “I don’t know, but your brother has this amazing strength to endure.”
Fran rolled her eyes.
“Tell me about it.”
“Seriously, any other person would have long given up. Maybe even begged for death before they went through that much pain,” I pointed out before I took one last sip of my tea. From the corner of my eye, I saw Fran nodding before she burst out laughing.
“You know, back when we were kids, Vincent had a thing for improvising.”
“Really?”
“Yeah. Once, the TV wasn’t working as well as it should have been, and he took a coat hanger to it. I don’t know how, but we had reception again,” Fran said, laughing.
“And by the way, we had the best reception in the neighborhood,” she added. I smiled.
“Sounds like he was quite the handyman,” I said.
“Maybe that is why I was so surprised when he took to his career. But he is really good at it, so I guess he is a man of many talents.” I rubbed my hands together as I looked around the yard. It was such a beautiful, peaceful night.
“To be honest, when I left you in there, I was wondering how you were going to get the mini saw to him,” she said. I looked at her and shook my head.
“What?” I asked.
“The mini saw was kind of supposed to go to him. I didn’t know how you would be able to get through past all the guards and…” Her voice trailed off when she realized that there was no way she was going to say anything that was going to make me feel better.
“I guess I shouldn’t have underestimated you, huh?” She asked.
“Damn right,” I said with a smile. “But it was kind of a life or death situation. I knew that I had to do something or be prepared to mourn your brother, and if I have to be honest, I don’t think I will ever be ready to do that.”
Fran looked at me and sighed.
“I guess Vincent kind of owes you his life.”
I forced a smile and nodded.
“I guess he kind of does.”
There was a long silence before she finally spoke again.
“It must have been weird and scary when my brother transformed in front of all those people, huh?” My mind flashed back to the prison Vincent and I had been in. I could almost see the fear on the guards’ faces.
“You have no idea,” I said, a smile on my face.
“I wonder what Nathan looks like when he transforms into a werewolf,” she said. I looked at her and shook my head. This was not one of those things you just wondered about. I knew exactly where her head was.
“Oh, come on. I know that what you really want to see is a naked Nathan Hughes,” I said. Even in the dimly lit evening, I could see that she was blushing. She giggled and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.
“Seriously, Fran. You do remember that Nathan Hughes is the same man who tried to kill your brother a few months ago, right?” I asked, and she nodded.
“Oh don’t get me wrong. I don’t think that is something I can ever forget,” she said. “But Vincent is okay now, and Nathan has obviously had a change of heart.” I shook my head. I was not convinced.
“People can change, Winnie. Matter of fact, people do change,” she added. I just shrugged.
“That may be true, but I am not sure how much a person can change or how often it actually happens,” I
