slow,â said Friday.
âThatâs a bit harsh,â said Binky, taken aback. âI know my score on the IQ test was on the low side, but I try my best.â
âI donât mean your brain,â said Friday.
âAlthough, it is,â added Melanie.
âI mean, you arenât very fast at running, are you?â said Friday.
âNo, you do have a point there,â agreed Binky frankly. âBut you might have noticed that Iâm a big chap. Obviously tall. But also, under these clothes ââ
âPlease donât be disgusting, Binky,â said Melanie.
âIâve got a lot of muscles,â said Binky. âThe rugby master has had me lifting weights. I can bench press a lot of those heavy disc things they put on the barbell. I thought if I kitted up in running shorts and a singlet, I might cut an impressive sight. Catch the eye, if you know what I mean.â
Friday shook her head to try and rid herself of the mental image of Binky in skimpy clothes. âI think I get the gist of it.â
âSo what do you need from us?â asked Melanie.
âI wanted to talk it through with you,â said Binky. âFind out what you thought of it as an idea.â
âIt sounds like a terrible idea,â said Friday. âBut that doesnât mean it wonât work.â
Chapter 15
The Potato Dash
âWhatâs that smell?â asked Melanie.
Friday and Melanie were standing with Binky at the starting line of the Potato Dash. All the other competitors were limbering up with stretches or by bouncing up and down on the spot.
Friday sniffed the air. There was a very disagreeable aroma. âItâs part Tiger balm, part fear sweat and partly the chook poo Mr Pilcher is currently watering into the flowerbeds on the far side of the science block,â said Friday.
âI knew athletic events were unpleasant but I didnât realise they would smell so bad,â said Melanie.
âSo who is the favourite to win?â asked Friday.
âHiggenbottom is fast, and so is Derrick Struthers, and Jamison,â said Binky. âBut Rajiv Patel and Derrickâs brother, Jason, are devious. Theyâre roommates. Last year they concocted a scheme to slow everyone down with banana peels.â
âDid it work?â asked Friday.
âNo, the winner punched Patel in the nose and kept running,â said Melanie.
âYouâre super brainy,â said Binky, turning to Friday. âDo you have any tips on how to win a running race?â
âThereâs no point asking her now,â said Melanie. âSheâs too distracted by seeing Ian in his super-short running shorts.â
âI am not!â said Friday. âI havenât even noticed him.â
Friday turned round and saw Ian right behind her. He was stretching his quadriceps while standing on one leg. Friday had never seen him in so little clothing before. Students usually wore polo shirts for PE and much longer shorts. Not that Friday ever attended PE lessons if she could avoid it. Sheâdnever noticed how lean and muscular Ianâs shoulders were before.
âNow sheâs too distracted,â said Melanie.
âWainscott is a double threat,â said Binky. âHeâs fast and sneaky.â
Ian smirked as he caught Friday staring at him. âLike what you see?â asked Ian.
âYou have pleasing symmetry,â said Friday truthfully.
Ian raised his eyebrows.
âYou know youâre good-looking, so you donât need me to tell you,â said Friday.
Ian smiled. âPlease stop flirting with me. Iâm trying to concentrate on winning this race.â
Fridayâs otherwise incredibly intelligent brain was suddenly unable to organise itself into finding a suitably cutting retort. All she could think to say was âbahâ but she realised this didnât sum up her thoughts and feelings adequately, so she simply turned back
