wailed Harriet. âIâll be expelled. And I canât get expelled. Iâll be the first person in my family to get anything less than a postgraduate degree.â
âI can dob you in,â said Friday, âbecause that is what Iâve been hired to do, and I canât see any moral justification for what youâve done. You only did it for the money. And your family must be well-off if youâre studying here.â
âBut I do need the money,â said Harriet.
âWhy?â asked Friday.
âThe Pimpernel stole my laptop!â wailed Harriet.
âI didnât see that coming,â said Melanie.
âBut laptops arenât allowed on school property,â said Friday.
âI know,â said Harriet. âThatâs why I couldnât report the theft. It was 3G capable. Iâd been using the laptop to do extra online study drills to keep my grades up. If my parents find out Iâve lost my laptop and my grades drop, theyâll kill me.â
âSurely they wonât literally kill you,â said Melanie.
âI donât want to find out,â said Harriet.
âThe first thing you need to worry about is not getting expelled,â said Friday. âThe Headmaster is seriously angry, but if you donate the proceeds from your crime to the schoolâs beautification program, Iâm sure he will be forgiving.â
âBut my laptop?â said Harriet.
âDonât worry,â said Friday. âNo thief is going to elude me for long. When I catch The Pimpernel youâll get your laptop back, or at the very least get the ticket stub for the pawnshop he sold it to.â
Chapter 14
Trouble with Binky
When Friday and Melanie returned to their dorm room, they found the door unlocked.
âSomeoneâs broken in,â whispered Friday.
âAgain?â said Melanie. âShould we go in and find out who it is?â
âIt might be a dangerous psychopath,â said Friday.
âWho at this school is a dangerous psychopath?â asked Melanie.
âHalf the student body,â said Friday. âAnd all the teachers in the maths department.â
âI suppose,â agreed Melanie. âWell, we could stay out here but the dangerous psychopath is bound to find us eventually, so we might as well go in and get it over with.â
âAll right,â said Friday. âBut stay behind me. If heâs violent, Iâll try reasoning with him while you run to fetch help.â
âIâd rather run to the dining room and have another jam tart,â said Melanie. âThey were very good tonight.â
Friday pushed open the door to the room. âWhoâs in there?â she called.
âItâs only me.â
Friday stuck her head around the door. âBinky?!â
Melanieâs older brother Binky was sitting on her bed. He was perched on the corner, because he was self-conscious that he was a large boy and he didnât want to rumple or break anything accidentally.
âWhy did you break into our room?â Friday asked.
âI didnât,â he said, shocked at the suggestion. âThe door was wide open when I arrived.â
âThatâs probably my fault,â said Melanie. âClosing things isnât my strong suit. Thatâs why I try to always leave the room with you. I know youâll close the doorbehind you. But if Iâm on my own, the responsibility is too much.â
âWhat are you doing here?â asked Friday. âHave you just come to visit Melanie?â
âNo,â said Binky earnestly. âI need help.â
âYouâre not in a fight again, are you?â asked Friday.
âGosh, no,â said Binky, shaking his head. âSomething much worse.â
âWhat?â asked Melanie.
Binky leaned forward and whispered, âIâve fallen in love.â
âOh dear,â said Melanie.
âI know,â said Binky,
