nodding his head in agreement.
âKnow what?â asked Friday.
âBinky isnât very good at that type of thing,â explained Melanie. âYou know, expressing himself and talking to girls.â
âHe talks to me,â said Friday.
âYes, but I donât think of you as a girl,â said Binky.
âWhy not?â asked Friday.
âI think of you as more as a figure of authority who rescues me when Iâve got myself in a terrible bother,â said Binky truthfully.
âWell, that is nice,â said Friday. âBut you could think of me as a girl as well.â
âI suppose,â said Binky. His brow wrinkled as he thought about it. âBut itâs not entirely my fault. Youâre the one who chooses to wear those cardigans.â
âSo who are you in love with?â asked Melanie.
âI donât know her name,â said Binky.
âWhy not?â asked Friday.
âHavenât had the courage to ask her,â said Binky seriously. âSheâs too beautiful for just a run-of-the-mill sort of conversation. Iâd have to think of something charming to say, and that could take hours.â
âSo where have you seen her?â asked Melanie.
âHere,â said Binky.
âIn our room?â asked Friday.
âSheâs your neighbour,â said Binky.
âAh, the princess,â said Friday. âEveryone seems to be falling in love with her.â
âNo, not that one,â said Binky, shaking his head. âSheâs not to my taste at all. Sheâs too pretty and ⦠princessy.â
âI didnât know you had a type, Binky,â said Melanie.
âI do,â said Binky.
âSo what does your love interest look like?â asked Friday.
âSheâs radiant,â said Binky. His eyes glazed over as he imagined her. âSheâs petite, has shiny brownish hair and has lips the colour of, well ⦠lips.â
âSo, in other words, sheâs short, has clean hair and normal-coloured lips,â said Friday.
âYes, thatâs her,â said Binky happily. âAnd she has the warmest heart.â
âHow do you know if youâve never spoken to her?â asked Melanie.
âBecause she never says anything,â said Binky. âShe just glows through her eyes. At least, I think she does. Itâs hard to tell because she wears rather thick glasses.â
âYouâve fallen in love with Debbie!â exclaimed Friday.
âI have?!â said Binky. âJolly good. I knew I was doing the right thing to come here. You always help me out.â
âWhy donât you just knock on the door and say hello?â said Friday.
âAre you out of your mind?!â said Binky. He looked horrified by the suggestion. âWhat would that lead to?â
âA conversation,â said Friday.
âWell, thatâs not a good idea then, is it?â said Binky. âHardly my strength.â
âHeâs got a point,â agreed Melanie.
âThen whatâs your plan?â asked Friday.
âI was thinking of impressing her by going in the Potato Dash,â said Binky.
âWhatâs that?â asked Friday.
âOnce a year they hold a race around the quadrangle,â said Melanie. âRunners have to sprint through the corridors of the buildings that make the four sides of the quadrangle, then be the first to touch the flagpole in the centre, all while carrying a twenty-kilo sack of potatoes.â
âItâs a great honour to win,â said Binky.
âThe Vice Principal won it when he was a student here,â said Melanie.
âReally?!â exclaimed Friday.
âThere was a bout of chicken pox that year,â explained Melanie. âHe was the only entry.â
âThere is one flaw in your plan,â said Friday.
âOnly one?â said Binky in surprise. âWhat is it?â
âYouâre very
