think about this thing with Kaz; I needed to decide what to do.
But that wouldnât be nice. At the very least I should answer and tell Trevor I couldnât talk right now.
âHello?â I said into the phone. âTrevor? Listen, Iââ
He didnât let me finish. âGuess what.â he said. âIâm coming after all!â
âHuh?â I blinked, confused. âComing where?â
âThere. To my relativesâ place, I mean. The reunion is on again!â
ChapterEight
I was so stunned, I couldnât respond for a second. I just sat there, my mouth opening and closing like I was some kind of demented fish gasping for air.
âChloe?â Trevor said after a moment. âAre you still there?â
âWh-when are you coming?â I blurted out, still trying to catch up.
âWeâre making a whole vacation of it,â he said. âMy stepdad says heâs not driving that far just to turn around and come home again after a couple of days.â
He sounded slightly disgruntled, but I ignored that. âWhen?â I said again.
âThis Friday. Weâll be there through the following weekend. Are you going to be around? Because seeing you is pretty much the only silver lining to missing over a weekâs worth of rehearsals.â He sighed. âI tried to tell my mom I need to be here now, with the new drummer and all, but itâs like Iâm speaking a whole other language or somethingââ
âHold on,â I cut him off. My mind had finally clicked into gear, calculating what heâd just told me. âWait! But that means . . .â I gasped. âOh my gosh, this is so incredible! My schoolâs having a dance, and I was already sort of daydreaming earlier about if you were here and we could go, and thinking about whether some stuff is meant to be, and . . .â Realizing I was babbling and probably not making much sense to him, I forced myself to stop and take a deep breath. âTrevor,â I said. âWill you go to the dance with me?â
He laughed. âAre you serious? Youâve got a school dance coming up? While Iâm in town?â
âUh-huh. Itâs a week from Saturday night. So what do you say?â I held my breath.
He didnât keep me in suspense. âAbsolutely,â he said. âIâd love to go!â
I let out the breath and smiled. âCool,â I said. âI canât wait for you to meet everyone. Thatâll be the perfect time.â Then I remembered something else. âOh!â I exclaimed. âUnless . . . Did you say youâre getting here this coming weekend?â
âUh-huh. Weâre driving down on Friday after my stepdad gets off work.â
âBut that means you can come to the dance marathon, too!â I exclaimed, hardly believing how great this was turning out. âItâs this coming Sunday.â
âThe what? Another dance?â
âNo, the dance marathon. Itâs that fund-raiser I told you about, the one for the kids?â I was getting more excited by the second. âIâm playing in the band, and the cheerleaders and some of the kids are going to danceâremember?â
âSure, yeah,â he said. âI didnât realize it was so soon.â
âItâs going to be superfun.â I gasped as another thought popped into my mind. âHey, maybe you can even play with us! It would be cool to have more guitaristsâespecially a great one like you.â
âOh okay.â He sounded kind of pleased by the compliment. âCould be fun, I guess. But Iâll have to let you know, okay? Iâm not sure yet whatâs happening with the whole reunion deal.â
I wanted to argue, to tell him he had to come to the marathon. I mean, how could he possibly miss out on something like that when he was only a few towns away? It was the perfect chance for
