us to spend the entire day together.
But I bit my tongue. He knew all that; he was going to try to work it out but didnât want to make any promises he couldnât keep. Family first, right? I could only imagine what my own parents would say if I wanted to skip out on some big family reunion to hang out with my boyfriend. Not that our family reunions were a big deal, since we pretty much all lived within half an hour from one another. Still.
âOkay, sure,â I said. âLet me know when you find out.â
âWill do. I can probably work it out,â he said. âAnyway, itâs going to be so weird being back in my old stomping grounds, you know? I havenât been back in a couple of years.â
âYeah.â I tried to imagine that. Iâd lived in the same townâthe same houseâfor my entire life. âI canât believe Iâm finally going to see you in person again after all this time!â
âHope you wonât be disappointed.â His voice took on a teasing tone.
âWeâll see,â I teased back. âI hope you havenât been sending me some cute guyâs pictures all this time.â
He laughed. âUh-ohâbusted!â
My bedroom door slammed open, and my brother stuck his head in. âMom says itâs time for lights out,â he announced loudly.
âHey,â I said. âDid you ever hear of knocking?â
âWhoâs that?â Trevor asked.
âMy rude little brother.â I made an ugly face at Timothy. He responded with an obnoxious gesture and then slammed the door shut again. âBut I guess I need to go. I donât want to annoy my parents so they ground me or somethingâI want to be free as a bird to spend tons of time with you while youâre here!â
âCool.â He chuckled. âOkay, guess I should hit the sack too. The guys and Iâum, I mean the band, you knowâwill have to pack in as many rehearsals as we can before I leave on Friday. Zoe still thinks she can get us in at the club soon, and we need to be ready.â
âYou will be. You guys are supertalented, and thatâs the main thing, right?â
âI guess.â He didnât sound too certain.
But I wasnât really focused on his band just then. I couldnât believe I was going to see him in less than a week! âIâll text you tomorrow so we can start making plans and stuff, okay?â
âSure,â he said. âTalk to you then. Good night, Chloe.â
As soon as I hung up, I immediately called Vanessa. When she picked up, I didnât bother to say hello. âOh my gosh, youâre not going to believe this . . . .â I began, barely pausing for breath as I filled her in.
She was almost as excited as I was. At first all she could manage were some squeals and chirps and other noises. Finally she said, gasping, âThis could totally be another verse!â
I knew what she meant without asking, and started to sing the chorus of our favorite song: â True romance, itâs the air that we breathe. Just us two together. Yeah, just you and me .â
About two words into it, Vanessa joined in. We sang it twice, and then I collapsed onto my bed with a sigh, resting my head on Gordoâs soft pink belly.
âI canât believe this is happening!â I exclaimed. âItâs seriously like a dream come true. A daydream, at least.â
âI know, right?â Vanessa sounded wistful. âI hope I meet a guy as cool as Trevor someday.â
âYou will. I still want to find you your own romantic date for the dance, remember? Now we can double!â
âDonât bother,â she said. âSince youâll be with Trevor now, I might as well just go stag with Kaz.â
Kaz. I gulped, realizing Iâd sort of forgotten him when Iâd heard Trevorâs news. My gaze wandered to the window, where Iâd looked out
