you?â
âThatâs right.â
âThis way.â
He started off and Clint said, âNo, that one.â He pointed to a table in the back.
âOkay.â
They walked to the table and sat down.
âWhat can get you?â the waiter asked.
âSteaks all around. Coffee for me, tea for the ladies.â
âNo,â Bride said, âI will have coffee.â
âSo will I,â Bridget said.
âYou heard the ladies,â Clint said. âCoffee all around, too.â
âYes, sir. Cominâ up.â
Clint kept his eyes on the door, and the windows. He didnât see the Lane brothers on the street, but that didnât mean they wouldnât show up.

The hotel clerk looked up as two men came in from the back, having used the rear door to enter. Actually, he smelled them before he saw them.
âWhoâs the good-smellinâ man, Leo?â Zack asked.
Leo tried to answer and not breathe at the same time.
âHis nameâs Clint Adams, Zack.â
âYer lyinâ,â Ben said.
âI ainât,â Leo said. âHe wrote it right here in the register.â
âThen heâs lyinâ,â Ben said. âAinât he, Zack?â
âI donât think so, Ben,â Zack said. âNot the way he stood there talkinâ to us.â
âThen if heâs the Gunsmith . . .â
âHe wouldâve killed you easy,â Zack said. âWithout a thought.â
âJesus . . .â
âHow long is he stayinâ?â Zack asked Leo.
âOnly âtil morninâ.â
âAnd whoâs he got with him?â
Leo smiled.
âTwo of the prettiest gals youâd ever wanna see,â he said.
âThat a fact?â Ben asked.
âThatâs a fact,â Leo said. âAnd they smell real nice, too.â
Zack and Ben exchanged a glance, and then Zack said to Leo, âOkay, little brother. Thanks.â
âSure, Zack.â
Zack and Ben returned to the rear of the hotel, stepped out the back door, and stopped short.
âWhat theââ Zack said.
There were five men standing there, all armed.
âTake it easy,â Troy Ahern said, âwe just want to talk.â
âAbout what?â
âAbout a subject weâre all interested in,â Ahern said. âThe Gunsmith and his two ladies.â
Zack and Ben exchanged a glance.
âWeâre also buyinâ the drinks,â Ahern added.
âWell, okay, then,â Zack said. âWeâre willinâ ta listen.â
âWhatâs a good place to drink?â Ahern asked him.
âMy brother and me got just the place,â Zack said. âFollow us.â
THIRTY-TWO
âYou look worried,â Bride said while they ate.
âI am.â
âAbout getting killed?â
âIâm worried about the two of you,â Clint said. âIf something happens to me, how will you get to Shasta?â
âNothing will happen to you,â Bridget said.
âWell, we had a close call in Saint Joe,â he said. âWe still donât know if somebodyâs following us from New York, and now we have to worry about these two jaspers who smell like bears.â
âWell then,â Bride said, âmaybe you should tell us how to get there from here, just in case something does happen.â
âBride!â
âNo, sheâs right,â Clint said. âYou girls should know how to get to Shasta on your own, just in case.â
âWell . . . all right,â Bridget said.
âLetâs go back to the hotel so we can talk about it.â
âLetâs have some pie first,â Bride suggested.
