Eric Hagel slapped the Sunday paper shut. âNo TV for me for one whole week. Iâm going cold turkey!â he said.
His motherâs eyes fluttered. â What did you say?â
âYou heard right, Mom. Americaâs TV Turn-Off Week starts tomorrow.â
Ericâs mom cleared off the breakfast table. âReally? My goodness, what a wonderful idea.â
âI canât wait to tell my friends,â Eric said.
His mother smiled. âSeven days is along time. Do you think the Cul-de-sac Kids will go for it?â
âWell, Iâm gonna find out,â he said.
An emergency meeting was held at Dunkum Mifflinâs house. Right after church.
Abby Hunter sat in the presidentâs chairâa giant beanbag. âThe meeting will come to order,â she said. âAny old business?â
Eric shook his head. So did Dunkum and Jason. And so did Stacy, Carly, Dee Dee, and Abbyâs Korean brothersâShawn and Jimmy Hunter. Nine members, counting Eric.
âOK, what about new business?â asked Abby.
Eric spoke up. âDid everyone read the morning paper? The part about America turning off the TV?â
The kids just stared at him.
âCâmon! Donât you guys read the paper?â he asked.
Abby smiled. âI saw the article.â
âSo . . . are you with me?â said Eric. âDo you wanna pull the plug?â
âOn the tube?â said Jason. âAre you kidding?â
âI think itâs a great idea,â said Eric. âJust think of all the books you could read.â
The others looked shocked.
âMaybe we should have a vote,â suggested Abby.
âOK with me,â said Eric.
âAll in favor of no TV, raise your hands,â Abby said.
Eric, Abby, and Dunkum shot their hands up. Then, very slowly, Stacy, Jimmy, and Shawn put theirs up. They were looking around, though, as they voted.
âLast chance to vote,â Eric piped up. He was saying it for Dee Deeâs and Carlyâssake. They were slow-poke members.
âOK,â whispered Carly. But she wasnât smiling about it.
âAll against no TV, raise your hands,â Abby said.
âWait!â Jasonâs hand went up, very slowly. âI must be crazy,â he muttered.
Abby made the report. âThe vote is carried. We pull the plug. All of us will.â
Jason groaned.
âHey, you voted for it,â Dunkum scolded. âYou canât complain now!â
Eric spoke up. âLetâs do something totally cool for TV Turn-Off Week.â
Jason Birchallâs eyes went crossed. âWeâre skipping TV for a week. Isnât that cool enough?â
âBut wait. I have another idea,â said Eric.
âLetâs hear it,â said Abby.
The kids listened.
âI think our parents should turn off the TV, too,â Eric said. âNo TV for anyone.â
Dunkum was nodding his head. âItâs only fair,â he said.
âWhat a double dabble good idea!â Abby said, smiling.
Carly raised her hand. She was Abbyâs sister. âWhat about Mr. Tressler? Heâs not anyoneâs parent. Should he do it?â
Jason couldnât sit still. He was up dancing and jiving. âGood thinking, Carly. But Mr. Tressler lives alone. He watches tons of TV, especially at night. Whoâs gonna get him to agree?â
âMaybe older folks shouldnât be in on it,â Abby suggested.
Eric thought about that. âWe oughta have the whole cul-de-sac. If everyone in America is doing it, why not Blossom Hill Lane?â he said.
âOK with me,â Abby said.
âThen whoâs gonna break it to Mr. Tressler?â Jason asked.
âI will,â Eric spoke up.
âWay to go, Eric!â said Dee Dee.
âIâll go along,â Abby offered.
Shawn said in broken English, âI go, too.â
So it was set. Eric, Abby, and Shawn would pay a visit to Mr.
