held his hand up, a steel gun etched with verses from the Bible on its shiny surface glinting in the fire light.
â€œWe have to look at the whole picture, gentlemen,” Lenox interjected.
â€œSanna has two siblings. Twins. A brother and sister. Amara is at Spelman College, and the other, Darren, is at the University of Illinois, Chicago.”
An apple appeared in Lenox’s hand again as he walked with both hands behind his back, the green surface of the apple missing a piece. “This family is about unity. They don’t do anything without making sure family is protected first. We have to be smart and logical about this and not go out there in a weak state of mind and body. We all need to rest and process this shit. Research.” Lenox’s voice reflected his own authority and wisdom as he eyed everyone in the room.
Kali decided that was her cue. Clicking on her laptop, she said, “Nox is right. We do need to rest, but look, about that research end of all of this, if San is an Oracle . . . Remember the e-mails you sent me, Calvin? You said you think Kyo’s a Gargoyle because of some things you remembered back when we visited them a lot.”
Calvin nodded, as everyone focused their attention on Kali. “Well, if everything is true, then she is what will help keep our side strong and survive.”
Lenox gave Kali a slight smile, his pearly whites flashing for a moment.
Inwardly laughing, Kali added, “Of course, we need to check out her family too before we start handing out labels. These two women are not the only ones we have to protect. We have to protect both women’s families.” Not once looking up from the computer, Kali held her laugh as she counted in her mind and waited for the men’s reply as she searched for more information.
Every man groaned and stopped everything they were doing, as if lightbulbs flashed over their heads.
Lenox’s chuckle filled the room as he sighed, his hand sliding into his dark denim jeans. “We have to report this to Society, mainly your mother, man. See if they can explain why none of them saw this Guide and her family.”
Khamun stood again. The tapping of computer keys reassured him.
â€œYou know why, Nox. Mom’s been blocked, and this is going to piss her off even further, but I’ll do what I can. She’s going to want the whole family, shit. What more can you tell us? Break down her lineage. Maybe we can see if an ancestor is registered in Society.”
Lenox headed into the kitchen and came back out with a beer. He shook his head in agreement. He knew the team was going to dig up more info and want to do everything they could to protect this family. Hell, he couldn’t deny his own desire to rush back out and kick some ass and take names later, but he had to keep a rational head here. Everyone was battle-worn, and all of this info was fresh like baked bread. The team needed to research and sort this crap out.
â€œHmmm. First up, Kyo Satou. Age: twenty-six. She is about to be twenty-seven. Mother and father: Takiko and Hideo Satou. Has a younger brother Takeshi Satou, and get this—He’s at the University of Illinois, Chicago as well.”
Kali glanced up and clicked a button, and images of Sanna, her family, Kyo and her family showed on the TV screen. A picture of Takeshi and Darren in matching frat colors and canes flashed on the screen, as Kali scrolled on.
â€œTakeshi is enrolled in international business, and Darren is in law. Dang! Why am I acting brand-new about this?” Kali shook her head in frustration, and glanced at the men, who blankly stared at her and shrugged. Playful smirks flashed over their faces as she continued to stare.
â€œWhat?” every man said in unison, their playful stances quickly dropping at the seriousness in their little sister’s coco-rich eyes.
With a huff, she clicked a button on her laptop, cranking up the volume on the TV of a news
