into the air. âIt isnât funny. I hate itâand itâs all your fault. No one else has ever done this to me; you have some horrible effect on my hormones.â
His eyes opened wide in pleased surprise. A smile twitched over his mouth. âReally?â he said, gloating. âHow terrible!â
Chris observed his unabashed glee with embarrassed fury. âAnd you should be ashamed of yourself. Here you are taking advantage of myâ¦affliction.â
He grinned at her in silent amazement. âAffliction? If I thought you were serious Iâd really be mad.â
âI am serious,â she snapped, more out of momentum than seriousness.
He held the curve of her jaw in his hand. âYouâre a healthy, sensuous, responsive woman. Thatâs a beautiful gift, not an affliction. And youâre wrong about my taking advantage of the situation. I donât want you doing something youâll regret just because I stir up your hormones.â He tapped her temple with his index finger. âWhen I take you to bed it will be all of you. Your lovely illogical mind included.â He spun her around and pushed her toward the front door. âWeâll talk about this more over dinner. If you donât hurry, youâll be late for work.â
Chris checked her watch and grimacedâshe had no time in her schedule for knee-weakening kisses or men falling in love.
Ken reached into the hall closet and extracted Chrisâ ski jacket. âItâs supposed to be cold todayâmaybe some snow,â he told Chris, zipping herinto the coat as if she were going off to kindergarten. âBe careful driving home.â He gave her a slow, lingering kiss and playfully swatted her behind as she swung through the door.
She turned with an indignant profanity on the tip of her tongue, decided that a simple pat on the backside didnât warrant that much hostility, pressed her lips together in fury, and hurried to the truck. After all, she admitted, she was mad at Chris Nelson, not Ken Callahan. Ken Callahan hadnât actually done anything wrongâ¦darn it.
Â
Bitsy leaned against the rink guardrail and smiled at Chris. âYou look like you have a lot on your mind.â
âMmmmmm.â
âI canât tell if youâre depressed or elated. You have the most peculiar expression on your face.â
âThen it registers my mood perfectly.â
âA man?â
âMmmmmm.â
A devilish grin spread across Bitsyâs face. âThe man in the truck?â
âYeah,â Chris sighed. âDid I tell you heâs living with me?â
Bitsyâs eyes widened. âFast work!â
Chris wrinkled her nose. âNo. Itâs nothing likethat. Well, it is sort ofâ¦oh hell! Aunt Edna rented him the downstairs of the house.â
Bitsy tipped her head back and bellowed out a laugh. âGood old Aunt Edna. Somehow, Iâm not surprised.â
âThatâs not even the worst of it. My cousin Stephanie went into labor yesterday, and Edna flew off to Kansas City to help out with the twins. And she took Lucy with her.â
Bitsy looked more interested by the second. âSo itâs just the two of you in the house?â She giggled.
âYou can stop thinking whatever youâre thinking. Nothing happened.â
âYou sound disappointed.â
Chris slouched against the barrier. âI donât know. Heâs really yummy, but Iâve finally gotten over that stinker, Steven. I donât want to let another man into my life. My life is calm and orderly, now. Itâs comfortable.â Chris screwed up her face for emphasis. âItâs been over seven years since Iâve been really intimate with a man, and I havenât missed itâ¦until Ken arrived on the scene. Now itâs like an obsession. An enormous all-consuming blot on my life. Three days ago I didnât know this man existed, and now
