knew Faith had caught him lying, and this was his way of apologizing.
“Thanks Zac. I really needed the coffee; you know I love the chocolates and...flowers are always welcomed.”
Zac had already opened the box of chocolates before pushing it in front of her. “Glad you liked it.” he said as he bent down and kissed her on her cheeks. Then looking at the clock, he continued, “Chelsea told me the clothes are here. You need to get changed. The meeting will be starting soon.”
Faith popped one piece of chocolate into her mouth and took the bag which Zac had lifted from the sofa. Then she walked into the private bathroom in the office. There was a shower and the changing room still had a few of her father’s suits hanging in the wardrobe. Touching one of the coats, she sighed.
She ran her hands down the sleeve of her father’s coat. Her father was a strong man who recently had still insisted on changing the light bulb which had fused in her house. He had hoisted the ladder onto his shoulders and fixed the bulb like an efficient handyman. Her father, a man who was always so full of vigor.
A tear rolled down the corner of her eyes. She had always thought her father was infallible. How could her superhero be sick and requiring a life-threatening surgery?
She swallowed hard and wiped off the drop of a tear that was rolling down the side of her cheek. No more crying. It wasn’t the time to be a baby. It was her turn to take care of him now.
Her mother had called and informed her that her father’s surgery was scheduled at five. She was going to make sure that she got there before that, so she had better changed and get the board meeting over and done with.
As she put on the clothes, she realized that Chelsea had gotten exactly the right size, and it suited her perfectly. Black, classic and simple, she loved it.
When she stepped out of the private bathroom, the two guys immediately stopped their conversations and looked at her. Anger glistened in their eyes, and they seemed to have been having a heated argument.
Faith halted in her steps as both their eyes turned to her. Biting her lower lips, she had no idea what was going on. In aim of trying to ease the tension, she did a pirouette and ended it with a curtsy.
“Do I look like a working woman?”
The guys laughed. Dylan walked over and held her hands. “You look beautiful. You always do.”
Faith blushed. “Thanks, I wondered how she knew what size to get,” Faith spoke as she gently slipped her hands from Dylan’s to brush off the invisible dust that seemed to currently coat her clothes.
“I guessed. It fits fine, right?” Zac voice boomed from behind Dylan.
“Oh, you guessed it exactly right. Thanks.”
Zac walked over, and with his hands on her shoulders, he turned her slightly away from Dylan to face him.
“Faith, I want to be beside you during the board meetings, but we will not be allowed. I will be right outside. Don’t worry so much, just be yourself. Listen and do not say too much unless there is a need to. Understand?”
Faith nodded. Looking straight ahead, she saw his wrinkled shirt again and sniggered. Zac had caught what she was staring at and smiled.
Not wanting to leave Dylan feeling out of the loop, she told Dylan about what had happened in the morning.
The side of Dylan’s lips turned up, but he made no comments. “Faith, I have called two of your board members. They are my father’s friends and though they are not the major shareholders, they have agreed not to make things difficult. They have also agreed to try to sway the other members in your favor so just relax, all right? Like what Zac had said, speak only when there is a need. There is no need to give anyone any arsenal to attack you.”
Zac looked away and smirked. Did Dylan actually speak Zac’s name like a snarl or had she imagined it? Her brows furrowed for a moment as she pondered upon that, but she had enough on her mind already, so she
