just friends.

As Faith watched Zac strode out of her office, she blinked again. Would he have kissed her if Dylan hadn’t walked in?
She had been stunned to absolute stillness when she felt his lips brushed hers, and when he leaned in again, she could have straightened up and stopped everything but she didn’t. Her heart had rate raced, and she took in a deep breath, but the kiss never came.
She didn’t know if she should be angry or thankful for Dylan’s sudden entrance. Had he just pitied her? As much as she would have liked the kiss to happen, she was glad that it hadn’t. It gave her some time to think.
Looking at Dylan, she saw a flicker of anger but it passed almost as soon as Zac walked out. “Hungry?” Dylan turned his attention back to Faith and placed the food he had bought on her desk. Taking out the food from the plastic bags, he settled into the seat opposite hers.
Thai food. She helped Dylan open up the food and dug in. She had just lifted up her chopsticks when someone knocked on the door. Both of them glanced toward the door, with Faith hoping it was Zac and Dylan, hoping it wasn’t.
    “Come in.”
Chelsea walked in with a paper bag in her hand. “Your office attire that Mr. Hayden told me to order. The rest has been delivered to your house.”
Faith pushed her chair back, but Dylan stood before she did and gestured for her to sit and eat. Taking the bag from Chelsea, he placed the bag on the black leather sofa by the side of the office and settled back into his seat.
They ate quietly, without any conversation. Faith was busily flipping through the files and trying to get as much information into her head as she could. With Zac out of the room, her anxiety was on the rise. All the fear that she was feeling minutes ago came back with a vengeance, and she felt the sudden need to understand and know it all.
The lack of sleep was severely affecting her brain cells. Normally, she had fantastic memory. She had managed to get honors in university without really spending much time studying, yet at that moment; nothing seemed to be able to enter her skull.
“How’s everything so far?” Dylan asked after finishing the meal.
“Confusing. Overwhelming.” Faith put a tiny smile on her face. She didn’t want Dylan making a big deal about it, she was already drained, and she really just wanted things to keep moving on so that she could go home and get some much needed sleep.
She needed another cup of coffee, or she might just fall asleep during the board meeting.
Stretching herself, Faith glanced at the clock and realized that it had been almost an hour. “Gosh, I’m so sorry Dylan. I was concentrating on work, and I didn’t know it had been so long.”
Dylan smiled. “Don’t worry about it. I know what it feels like to get lost in your work.”
Reaching over, she placed her hand over his and gave it a gentle squeeze. “Thanks, for being such a great friend. Coffee? I seriously need some. I will ask Chelsea to make some.”
    “No thanks. I’m fine.”
Before Faith could pick up the phone to call Chelsea through the intercom, Zac came in through the door with three Starbucks cups, a paper bag and a bouquet of flowers. Calla lilies, her favorite.
Handing her the bouquet, Zac pulled out a box of XOX truffles. There are many more expensive chocolates in the world, but Faith just loved those chocolates.
“Hot mocha, with extra foam.” He smiled and winked at Faith while setting a Starbucks cup down on her desk and offered one to Dylan. Dylan raised his palm before him, and Zac shrugged. Taking a cup for himself, he put the remaining cup on a small coffee table beside the sofa.
Faith watched Zac move around the office while she held her bouquet of flowers.
Zac had bought her flowers before, but he had never given one to her in front of Dylan. As she racked her brain wondering why Zac was doing this, she remembered the conversation that she had with him in the car. Zac
