sir!â
When she went out, Trueheart was wrapped around his mother with his girlâWhat was her name?âbeaming at them and most of the division surrounding them.
She cut away to grab a minute with Mira.
âHowâs Mr. Mira doing?â
âHe insisted I come, and our daughterâs with him, so . . . Heâs fine, really. He actually planned to go to the university today, but I put my foot down. He needs another day.â
âYou didnât get much sleep.â
âNo, no, I didnât. I have a lot of people I care about who put their lives on the line every day. Itâs part of working with the police. Iâve lost some, and seen others injured. You live with it, cope with it. But Dennis . . . he lives a quiet life, and I wasnât prepared to have him hurt like this.â
She stopped, drew a breath. âWell. I spoke with the governor.â
âSeriously?â
âMandyâs not the only one with connections,â Mira said, and now her voice was brisk and cool. âHe understands the situation and circumstances, and since he knows her . . . suffice it to say thereâll be no blowback from that quarter.â
âOkay.â
âI also spoke with Mandy.â
âYou keep busy.â
âWe detest each other, but I know how to read her, and how to push buttons. She hasnât heard from him, thereâs been no contact from whoever took him. Sheâs more angry than worried. If it wasnât for Dennis Iâd advise you to toss this case aside, butââ
âLook, Iâm going to keep working this, but Hansonâs in a position to get warrants so heâs likely to get deeper than I can. But weâre on it, and Iâll be in touch. Iâve got to say something to Trueheartâs mother, then Peabody and I are going to have a talk with his current sidepiece.â
Mira laid a hand on Eveâs arm. âHe wonât thank you for that, even if information you gather helps save his life.â
âGood thing Iâm not in it for the thanks.â
She walked up to Trueheartâs mother, had to resign herself to another hug, this one a little on the weepy side.
âThank you, Lieutenant. Troyâs wanted this since he was a boy, and you helped him reach that dream. Last night I asked him what he wanted now, now that heâd made detective. He told me he wanted to be as good a cop as you are.â
âMrs. Trueheartââ
âPauline, please, itâs Pauline. Iâm glad you set the bar high. I donât want him to settle for less. I want you to know heâll be proud every day when he picks up his shield, and Iâll be proud of him.â
Eve wanted escape, wanted the work, but found herself speaking. âHeâs smart, and heâs observant, and has a way of working through a problem thoughtfully. His looks donât hurt. He looks handsome and homespun,â Eve explained. âAnd some people mistake that for him being a soft touch, easy to dupe. Heâs not. And heâs got a shiny code of honor you should be proud of because I figure youâre the one who put it in him.â
âThank you for that, thank you very much for that.â Her voice broke, her eyes welling up. âSorry. Emotional day.â She gave Eveâs hand a squeeze, then hurried away.
âThat was really good stuff to say to her.â Peabody stepped up beside her.
âShe started crying again.â
âItâs a mom thing.â
âLetâs get the hell out of here and go do the cop thing.â
âThereâs cake.â
âYour pants are loose, Peabody.â
âDamn it.â As she rushed after Eve, Peabody glanced back at the refreshment table. âHaving loose pants means I could eat a little cake.â
âHaving loose pants means you can get out of them quicker so we can get back in the field.â
