yeah,â says Torch, looking uncomfortable. âItâs a very cool design of my finger shooting flame. Unfortunately Iâm wearing sleeves today or Iâd show it to you.â
âIâve heard itâs quite something,â says Southern Cross, straight-faced, and then he strides away.
âI really need help with the Hero media on this one, but Kyle wonât return my calls,â says Cannonball.
âYouâll be right, Popgun,â says Torch, putting an arm around Cannonballâs slumped shoulders. âAn inquiry will just be for appearanceâs sake. As a gesture for the head honchos in Gotham and for Channel 78737 to beam out, showing the incident has been dealt with. It will blow over.â
Blow over. I canât help myself and glance over at Cyclone Tracyâs table. Sheâs looking straight at me, and smiling. Poom! I involuntarily turn into a cloud as the others stand up.
âOops,â says Logi-Gal, lurching backwards as though sheâs stepped in something icky. âSorry Pancake Pete. I didnât see you down there.â
CHAPTER 12
A DEATH IN THE FAMILY
T he Northland Shopping Centre, long after closing time.
The OK Team approaches the multi-level car park.
âWhatâs the G.O.?â asks Torch, strutting.
âThe what?â
âThe G.O.â
âGame Operation?â asks Cannonball.
âGold Orders?â asks Logi-Gal.
âGood Oil?â I ask.
âGame On?â suggests The Gamer.
Torch looks uncomfortable. âActually, I just meant âWhatâs the go?ââ
âThen say that, Candle Head,â says Cannonball. âGeez, where are you from? Los Angeles?â
âIf thatâs half a world from you, then I wish I was,â snarls Torch.
âAh the bickering begins â things have certainly returned to normal around here,â says Logi-Gal.
âChildren,â I say, to break the tension. âThere are bad guys up ahead. Any chance we could tune in?â
âSure, whatâs the G.O.?â Torch gives Cannonball a defiant stare as he says it.
âI have N.O. idea,â Cannonball sneers right back at him.
âLogi-Gal, give us an update,â I say.
âThe go is that weâre up against some familiar faces,â Logi-Gal says. âOur friend, Bushranger and his team. All still claiming to be Category 1 or 2 so we should be more than equipped to handle them. In fact, Torch, you canât use open flame on them and Cannonball, watch your strength.â
âIâm not hitting anybody,â Cannonball says.
âHang on a second,â I say. âWeâve discussed this. Bushranger was too strong last time. His gang members were so-so, but Bushranger was dangerous beyond Catergory 2.â
Torch shrugs. âNot in the middle of a shopping centre car park. Whatâs he going to attack us with? Pot plants?â
âGood point, Torch,â I say. âEven so, they did get the better of us last time, so be on your game. Letâs make sure we nail these losers, and fast. Letâs be sharp and dazzle them with the OK Teamâs collective might.â
The others stare at me, except Cannonball who is looking at the sky. âOr we could sit back and just watch as he takes them out,â he says, pointing as Southern Cross soars into the car park and lands Heroically on the far side of the parking bays.
âHe might need help,â I say weakly, wondering why we even bother. I put out my silver glove. âIâm okay!â
Hands and gloves meet mine. âYouâre okay!â they reply.
âWEâRE OKAY!â
Cannonball says, âIâm still not going to hit anyone. As long as weâre clear on that.â
âWith the Cross in the house, Cannonball, you shouldnât need to.â
And Cannonball flies beside us as we run deeper into the car park.
There are a couple of industrial bins near the
