Chapter One

My mother would not stop calling me. She had been phoning me ever since I’d stepped off the plane at Heathrow. “Call me and let me know how your flight was. Let me know how your cab ride went. How is your apartment?”
I was twenty-one years old, but you would think by the way my mom constantly worried I was twelve! Even though I was with my best friend, Sky, she still fretted relentlessly. My mother was very protective, to say the least. She wanted to make sure I was not talking to strangers, that I kept my money in different pockets in case I was mugged. Her questions and concerns were always raining from the sky like rain falls in the Amazon.
I just wanted to prove I could be on my own and explore on my own. I had to; it was time, especially if I were to move to New York City when I graduated to pursue acting as a career. The summer acting extensive was a perfect avenue to strengthen my acting skills and gain the necessary growth to polish my talent and bring me one step closer of one day stepping on Broadway. Sky and I shared the same dream—to be a professional working actor. Except she wanted to venture to film and television. I hadn’t decided if I wanted that or not. Both drama majors, she and I became instant best friends, and luckily, we were able to both attend the same extensive. I scraped and saved all year to afford the summer tuition.
I was from a small town in South Carolina called Kimp. Kimp was a land of tractors, shabby farmhouses, and lost cats. Sky was from Charleston, South Carolina and from a well to do family where she never had to worry about finances a day in her life.
London…London was everything Kimp was not. And I couldn’t keep my eyes from widening in awe of the incredible new sights, architecture, and newness around me.
“I know. It’s amazing isn’t it?” Sky admired as the light rain kissed the windows.
I had stars in my eyes and butterflies in my stomach. I couldn’t believe we were here! We were here and our classes would begin in two days! Which meant I had one day to actively look for a part time job to help pay for my living expenses. That was the only drawback to my perfect summer dream. Yet, I’d never been one to shy away from hard work. I would do what I would have to do. That’s what it takes to stay on top!
We took a cab to a cluster of shops and cafes. Our new temporary home was nearby—an apartment Sky’s wealthy parents paid for us. I was starving and craved a snack. Sky wanted to go shopping so we agreed to a happy medium. Coffee, then shopping. Er, window shopping for me. I need all my extra money for dining and small emergencies.
It was very busy at Angel Birmingham’s, one of London’s most popular coffee shops. I was just expecting your run-of-the-mill grab it and go café, but Angel Birmingham’s was very inviting, with cute tables and chairs outside if you were a people-watcher and wanted to just relax and take in the hustle and bustle.
We ventured into the adorable café.
“Hi there.” A chipper man with nice, thick brown hair, greeted me.
“Hey.” I smiled so the dimple in my cheek showed and my curly blonde hair fell into my face. “Latte please – oh, and could I have an application please?” I quickly threw that last bit in there as I tucked a tendril of hair behind my ear.
“We don’t’ have applications,” he said, his smile dropping from his face now that the greeting process was complete. “Drop off a resume.”
“Oh…I don’t have one of those things,” I let him know. He stared at me blankly before telling me the price of the drink.
“I’ll have a black coffee and we’re together.” Sky informed in her no nonsense manner. She was always so good at that.
