you can move on and not feel guilty.”
I sat down and began to sob.
    “That’s just fuckin’ great.”
    “What?” she asked.
“Cole told me he loved me last night,” I whispered.
    “Okay, and?”
    “And now we aren’t speaking.”
“What!” Stella exclaimed. “That doesn’t even make sense. You went from A to G in two seconds flat. How bad are you in bed?”
“Well, I said that I didn’t know, because of Ezra, so he got mad and kicked me out of bed,” I said.
“Well hell, I would have gotten mad and kicked your ass outta bed too. The man has real feelings for you, and you finally give him some tail, then tell him that you don’t know if you feel the same because of another man. Basically you made him feel like a booty call. And no man wants a one-time booty call from the woman he loves. Wait, lemme rephrase that. He will take the booty call, but he don’t want it to be a booty call, sweetheart. He wants you,” she explained.
“Did he know about Ezra?” I asked.
“I dunno if he knew, but you should worry more about Cole than Ezra’s cheatin’ ass at this point.”
    “I just never…” I said.
“That’s right, you just never. And that’s what’s wrong with you. You want this fairy tale Prince Charming romance mumbo jumbo, and he has been up in your house the whole time. And the joke’s on you, boo boo, because he has every right to cut his losses and move on. Cole is a good man,” she barked.
    “I…I…” I stammered.
“Girl, get your scrawny, stammering ass up, and go get your man,” she said, pushing me toward the door. “Now go home and get your man, and bring my damn shoes back.”
I walked home slowly, processing everything that Stella had just told me. How could I be so dense as to not see that Ezra was cheating on me? And with who? I was at the front door before I knew it, and Cole’s car was not there.
God, I have really screwed everything up!
I waited around for hours to see if Cole would come home, but he didn’t. I fell asleep thinking about all the women I knew Ezra could have been sleeping with. For the life of me, I couldn’t think of one person who could do that…but then again, I didn’t think Ezra would cheat. So what did I know?

The moment my eyes closed, I was back at the beach, sitting next to Ezra.
I turned to him. “You were cheating on me?”
He looked out at the water. Not all the time.
“What the fuck does that mean?”
It means what it means. Not all the time. You are a good girl, but sometimes a guy wants a bad girl.
“Did you really just say that to me?”
He turned to me. You asked.
His face wasn’t the same face I was used to, the sweet face that I adored and loved so much only months before. He had the face of a cheating asshole who didn’t care about anything but the pleasure another woman was giving him.
“Who was it? Or were there more than one?”
Does it matter? Looks like you found someone anyway.
“Cole had nothing to do with this.”
    Or does he?
He got up and walked into the water, glancing over his shoulder at me before disappearing into the waves.

“Wait!” I yelled as I shot up from my pillow.
I couldn’t believe it was the next morning already. I felt like I had just gone to sleep. I realized I had woken up to nothing. No alarm clock buzzing in my ear, and no Cole walking around, making the floorboards creak upstairs. I rubbed my eyes and looked at the alarm clock to see it was already ten-thirty.
My eyes widened as I ripped out of bed with a rush of adrenaline. I was officially two hours late for work. Imagining Rob angrily pointing at his watch, I tore through a pile of clothes in my dresser looking for my work uniform, which I finally found in the dirty clothes hamper. With everything going on, I hadn’t done any laundry.
Maybe this is a good thing. I’ll probably get fired, which will spur me to have to find a job I actually like.
I pulled out my phone and called the back office
