Sands?â
âOr Jack Entratter,â I said.
âOr maybe itâs who Jack Entratter works for,â Martin said, âbecause Hargrove really does have a hard-on for the mob.â
âWell, Iâm not in the mob,â I said.
âBut you have mob affiliations.â
âMy affiliations are with the Sands,â I said. âThatâs it.â
âWell,â Martin said, âthis is for you and him to resolve. Iâm just along for the ride.â
âFor how long?â I asked. âHargroveâs partners donât usually stick around very long.â
âI do happen to have my eye on another situation,â he admitted.
We had reached the interview rooms and Martin said, âStay here.â He went into a room and came out with Hargrove.
âIâve been waiting for you,â he said with an unfriendly smile. âCome with me.â
He took me to another interview room with just a table and two chairs.
âAm I under arrest, too?â I asked.
âOf course not,â Hargrove said. âThis is just a place for us to talk. Have a seat.â
Just to keep it from feeling like I was under arrest I sat on the side heâd usually take. He didnât mind. He sat across from me.
âSo whatâs goinâ on, Hargrove?â I asked. âFirst you try to pin this murder on Jerry, and now Danny? Whoâs next? Me?â
âNo, not you, Eddie,â Hargrove said. âBut your buddyâs girl, Penny OâGrady, might be next.â
âPenny? Why her?â
âDonât act innocent with me, Eddie,â he said. âYou knew when I had Jerry in here yesterday that the dead man was her old boyfriend.â
âNo,â I said, âactually, I didnât.â
He studied me for a moment, then said, âYou know what, Eddie? This is one of the few times I believe you.â
âWhy donât you tell me what this is all about, detective? This murder only happened yesterday and already youâve made two arrests.â
âI know how to do my job, Eddie,â Hargrove said. âIt didnât take us long to find Pennyâs connection to William Reynolds, our dead man.â
âConnection?â
âThey were partners once,â Hargrove said. âBoyfriend and girlfriend. Come on, donât tell me you donât know sheâs got a sheet.â
âI do know,â I said, âbut that was a long time ago. She was young.â
âThatâs what they all say,â he replied. âAs if being young forgives everything.â
âSome things.â
âWell, maybe not this,â Hargrove said. âOnce we had the girlâs name it led us right to your buddy the keyhole peeper. The rest was easy.â
âWhy easy?â
âBecause we canvassed the neighborhood where the murder took place and came up with Danny Bardiniâs description.â
âLots of guys look like Danny.â
âYeah, but lots of guys donât drive his car, with his license plate.â
âSomebody else could have been driving it.â
âWell, it hasnât been reported stolen,â Hargrove said. âReynolds was shot with a thirty-eight. Bardini carries a thirty-eight.â
âHas it been fired recently?â
âIt has. We got it off of Bardini when we took him in. I should have a ballistics match soon.â
Damn.
âWhat about his lawyer?â
âI believe weâre waiting for him. Not being sent by your boss, is he?â
âDanny has his own lawyer.â
âGood,â Hargrove said, âthen I wonât have to deal with another goddamned mob lawyer.â
âLook, can I see him?â
âSure,â Hargrove said, âmaybe you can get him to confess.â
âIâm sure he didnât do it.â
âYour loyalty is admirable. Come on. Iâll give you fifteen minutes.â
âVery
