generous.â
âIâm a generous guy.â
We left the room, went down the hall to another door.
TWENTY-NINE
âI n you go,â Hargrove said. âFifteen minutes.â
I opened the door and entered. It was a room like the one Iâd just left, furnished with a table and two chairs. Danny sat at the table, looking disheveled, like he hadnât slept in hours. There were several empty coffee containers on the table, and an empty Milky Way wrapper.
âCrap,â he said, âI thought it was my lawyer.â
âNice to see you, too.â
âHave a seat,â Danny said. âSorry I canât offer you some refreshment.â
I pulled out the other chair and sat across from him.
âWhatâs goinâ on, Danny?â
âThatâs what I want to know,â he said. âWe went to work today and the cops were waitinâ for us. I didnât know what the hell was going on until we got here and they told me I was under arrest for killinâ William Reynolds.â
âDid you and Penny talk about Reynolds?â
âWe did,â he said. âOld boyfriend who took advantage of her, blah blah blah. What do I care? I only care about who she is now.â
âThatâs fine,â I said. âNow tell me youâve never seen Billy Reynolds in your life.â
He didnât say anything.
âDanny?â
âI canât say that, Eddie.â
âOh Danny,â I said. âYou didnât tell me the whole story, did you?â
âNo, buddy, I didnât,â he said. âIâm really sorry, Eddie.â
âOK,â I said, âletâs talk about that later. Just tell me you didnât kill the guy.â
âI didnât kill the guy.â
I nodded. âI believe you.â
âSo now what?â
âSo now I guess we have to wait for your lawyer,â I said. âLook, I donât have much time. They say they got your description and your plate number, that you were in the area around the house.â
âI was,â he said, âbut I didnât kill him. I just wanted to talk to the guy, to convince him to leave Penny alone.â
âAnd did you talk to him?â
âI did.â
âDid you convince him of anything?â
âI didnât,â he said.
âWhat else?â
âI flattened him.â
âAnd?â
âThatâs it,â he said. âHe said Penny was gonna have to pay to get rid of him. I ⦠I told him there were easier ways, and I hit him. Just once.â
âAnd then?â
âAnd then I left.â
âWhatâd you mean when you said there were easier ways?â
âI was just trying to scare him, but the guy didnât scare.â
âOK, quick,â I said, âtell me what you saw when you were there.â
âNot much,â Danny said. âIâve been thinkinâ about it. I didnât see anyone else, didnât see any other cars. Not when I got there, and not when I left. As a witness, Iâm fuckinâ useless.â
âYou can say that again.â
The door opened at that moment and cut off any retort he might have had.
âYouâre done,â Hargrove said.
âMy lawyer here yet?â Danny asked.
âNot yet. But donât worry, youâll be the first to know.â
âCan I have another minuteââ I started, but I knew the answer even before he cut me off.
âNot a chance,â Hargrove said. âYouâre done. Letâs go.â
âIâll see you later,â I said to Danny.
âMy lawyer will get me out, Eddie,â he said. âI didnât kill anybody. Take Penny home.â
âIâll have Jerry take her, and stay with her,â I said. âIâll stick around until your lawyer gets here.â
âThanks.â
âHey, pit boss!â Hargrove snapped. âOut!â
