him. âHave you noticed nothing about me in the past few days? As it happens, Iâm perfectly comfortable in the country. I like to read and sew and go for long walks. Iâm not remotely a âsociety female.â â
âDid you or did you not go to an expensive ladiesâ school?â he asked.
âYes, butââ
âAnd were you presented to the queen? Did you dance at Almackâs? Did all your friends do the same?â
âWhat has that got to do with anything?â she demanded.
âYou said you werenât a society female. Iâm reminding you that you are.â When she opened her mouth to protest, he added hastily, âItâs the right kind of life for the daughter of Joseph Bancroft.â
âAnd what about for the wife of a lord of the realm?â she snapped.
âIn societyâs eyes, I am only a lord because I killed my brother. The rules for other men of rank donât apply to me. Trust me, the Black Baron canât give you the kind of life you deserve.â
âPerhaps I donât want that kind of life!â
He shook his head. âYou donât know what you want. How can you, after only a few days moldering here at ThornÂcliff? Give it another week, and youâll be bored senseless.â
âAnd you wonât even allow me the chance to find out, will you?â she snapped as she buttoned up her cloak. âYouâre throwing me aside out of some dubious attempt to protect me from . . . from nonsense.â She crossed her arms over her chest. âI told you I donât care about any of that, and if you choose not to believe meââ
âI choose to do what I think is right for you. You deserve better.â
âAbsolutely,â she said hotly. âI deserve a man who wants me.â
âI do want you!â
A blush darkened her fine skin. âIf you wanted me, youâd find a way to have me instead of making a lot of excuses.â
âTheyâre not excuses!â
At that moment, they heard noises outside. Hell and blazes, heâd forgotten that heâd asked a groom to saddle his horse half an hour ago. Thatâs when heâd seen the boys trying to get in.
Huggettâs voice drifted to where they stood. âI couldnât find him in the house, so heâs got to be out here.â
âPâraps,â the groom said. âIt ainât like him to keep me waiting so long.â
âMy lord?â called the butler from a healthy distance, since he knew better than to approach the entrance.
âBlast it all,â Martin hissed under his breath. âI have to go.â
âWell then, go,â she said with a sniff as she turned for the table. She hunted until she found her spectacles, then put them on.
When she made no move toward the door, he growled, âIâm not leaving you in here alone.â
âOh, for goodnessâ sake.â Ignoring his proffered arm, she hurried ahead of him, her sweet hips swaying in a motion that made him wish he could take back everything heâd said.
He moved swiftly up beside her, grabbing her arm just in time for them to walk out together. âIâm here, Huggett. I was just showing Miss Bancroft the barn.â
As the two of them emerged into the painfully bright morning sunlight, Huggett and the groom gaped at her. Too late, Martin remembered that her hair was down, though the rest of her looked presentable enough.
âYou allowed Miss Bancroft into the barn ?â Huggett said meaningfully.
Martin was just about to give his presumptuous butler a piece of his mind when Ellie answered. âActually I followed him in there, which is why heâs kicking me out.â She shot Martin a cold glance. âThank you for the tour, my lord.â Breaking free of his grip, she gave him a cool nod, then headed toward the house.
As he watched her flounce off wearing the cloak that
