Winâs opinion of Camille and her sisters was nothing new. Nor was Grayâs defense of her.
âBeryl was always much shallower than her sister.â
âAs they look exactly alike and, to my observation, behave in exactly the same manner, explain to me, yet again, why she isnât as shallow as her twin.â
âYou donât know her the way I do.â
âCorrect me if Iâm wrong, but isnât this the woman who broke your heart to marry someone with a title and fortune?â
âIn hindsight . . .â Gray chose his words with care. âWhat should she have done? She was about to be married.â
âEven soââ
âSheâs still angry with me,â Gray said.
â She is angry with you ?â Win said slowly.
Gray nodded. âStill.â
âAfter eleven years, she is still angry with you .â Winâs brow rose. âHow very interesting. I didnât know she had any right to be angry with you at all.â He studied his cousin for a long, thoughtful moment. âI thought you were the wounded party.â
âI was,â Gray said staunchly.
âI thought you and she were in love.â Win studied his cousin closely. âAnd that she chose someone else over you because he had money and you did not.â
âShe did.â
Skepticism glittered in Winâs eyes.
âI was in love with her.â
âAnd was she in love with you?â
âI thought so. No, I knew so.â Gray blew a long breath. âAdmittedly, we had never spoken of love and she had no idea of my feelings until that very day.â
âShe never said she loved you as well?â
âNo, butââ
Astonishment widened Winâs eyes. âYou told this woman, who had long considered you her friend, that you loved her on the day before her wedding?â
âI told you all that at the time.â
âNot exactly.â Win shook his head. âYou only told me that you loved her and she refused to marry you because you had no prospects.â
âThatâs what happened.â Perhaps he had not fully explained everything all those years ago.
âI thought there was more between you. The way you talked about her and your behavior, you led me to believe you and she had some sort of understanding.â
âI never saidââ
âNo wonder sheâs angry.â Win shook his head. âStill.â
âI think itâs a good sign,â Gray said.
âA sign of what?â
âOf her feelings.â
âIt seems to me her feelings are those of anger.â He sipped his whisky. âJustifiable, I might add.â
Gray choked. âJustifiable? How can you say that?â
âOh, let me see.â Sarcasm colored Winâs words. âYou sprang this on her without warning just as she was about to marry someone else. And then you left.â
âI thought it best.â Although at this moment, it did sound rather stupid.
âTo leave her and your family and your country?â
âWell, yes, butââ
âAfter declaring your love, you made no effort to speak to her again that day or the next. Correct?â
âIt seemed pointless.â A defensive note sounded in Grayâs voice. He had recognized his foolishness years ago. It wasnât at all pleasant to have his cousin now point it out.
âFurthermore, you have made no effort to contact her for eleven years. Is that correct as well?â
âYes.â Gray forced a cool note to his voice. âAs I said, it seemed pointless.â
Win took another swallow and studied his cousin. âHas it never occurred to you that this abrupt declaration of yours might have been so unexpected as to leave her stunned? Speechless?â
âShe did manage to get a few words out,â he snapped. âShe did admit she would marry me if I had money.â
âDid she?â
