suddenly. Before she could deny that claim by word or action, he was moving to stake it. She gasped as she felt the hardened power of his manhood thrust heavily into her softness.
    "Cade!"
His mouth took hers again, swallowing her small cry. Jamie felt the surging rhythm he imposed on her and gave herself up to it. She loved him, and in this moment of ultimate intimacy she could not pretend otherwise. Jamie was unaware of the tiny marks she made in Cade's bronzed back as her passion took control. She only knew there was nothing else in the world to compare with having Cade Santerre make love to her. She gloried in his desire, his undisguised need of her, and she took infinite pleasure in her own flaring passion.
Heedlessly, recklessly, totally, she surrendered to the demands he was making on her. At the same time she generated her own demands, and he answered them hungrily, making it clear he wanted to please.
For a timeless interval they drank thirstily of each other, engaged in a sensual battle that brought the shared excitement to higher and higher levels.
Then the spiraling, tightening sensation deep in Jamie's body spun abruptly out of control, dragging her into the vortex of a throbbing, tumultuous storm. It was the same storm she had encountered that night on the yacht six weeks ago, and it brought the same sob of wonder to her lips. She sensed the man above her lose his fierce control.
With a muffled shout of satisfaction, Cade followed her into the heart of the whirling winds of passion.
For an endless time they had the universe to themselves. And afterward Jamie refused to open her eyes.
She nestled into the welcoming heat of Cade's arms and went to sleep. When all was said and done, this was the way it was supposed to be.

Awareness returned a long time later, when a shaft of light from the bathroom angled across the bed.
Stirring sleepily, Jamie turned over and belatedly realized she was in her own bed. Memories of the night filtered back with disconcerting suddenness.
There had been the strange nightmare and then there had been Cade. Jamie shook her head, trying to clear the remnants of sleep from it. The bed was empty beside her.
    "Cade?"
"In here," he called from the bathroom. "Just wanted a glass of water. I'll be right back."
She heard the door of the mirrored cabinet open, and then there was silence from the other room. Jamie blinked in the darkness and snuggled back down into the pillows. But now she was wide awake, her mind alive with the problem she had created for herself tonight.
She had just allowed herself to be drawn back into the arms of a man who had once callously used her; a man whose arrogance knew few bounds; a man she had promised herself she would not allow back into her life unless she was in full control of him. She had meant to keep sex out of the picture until she was convinced she could handle it.
It would be simpler to pretend to be asleep when he emerged from the bathroom. Jamie had a feeling it would be difficult enough to deal with Cade Santerre in the morning, let alone the middle of the night.
When you weren't sure how to handle a volatile situation it was best to put it off for a while. Determinedly she kept her eyes closed.
But she wasn't going to have the opportunity of postponing the inevitable confrontation.
    "What the hell is this?"
Cade's gritted question was laced with fury. A small object landed on the quilt a few inches from Jamie's wide-open eyes. At the same moment the overhead light blazed as Cade hit the switch.
Startled, Jamie levered herself up on one elbow. Her unfocused eyes went from Cade's thunderous features to the object he had tossed down on the bed. She couldn't see well enough without her glasses to read the printing on the box, but she knew by its general size and shape what it was.
"My birth control pills," she answered with a calm she was far from feeling.
"I can see that. How long have you been taking them?"
    "Cade, what's the matter
