woman.â
âHolyââ Linc didnât know what else to say. If word got out about thisâ¦
âAnd sheâs missing.â
âWait, wait, wait,â Linc said. âYour father had a secret family and one of his children is missing?â
âHis only child with his mistress, wifeâ¦whatever you want to call her,â Bart said. âThe daughter he hadwith the woman is a toddler and we have no idea where she is.â
Unbelievable, Linc thought.
Bart ran a hand through his hair, his face growing troubled again. âYou think youâve got problems,â Bart said, and Linc could tell he was trying to make a joke. âIf I sat down and told you the whole sordid tale, itâd turn your hair gray.â
Linc knew he could say something pithy, but his accident had taught him that sometimes people needed a sounding board.
âWhat are you going to do?â he asked.
âFind my half sister. Focus on the Chase. Keep this out of the media.â
âYeah, but if the press gets word of thisââ
âThen Iâll be front page newsâ¦again,â Bart said with a wry twist of his lips. âDoesnât matter. I have to do whatâs right, and it doesnât sit well with me that somewhere out there I have a half sister thatâs God knows where living who knows what kind of life. My father might be a jerk, but Iâm not.â
Linc simply marveled. Here was a man who lived by his convictions. Who wasnât afraid to tempt fate to do what was right. Who didnât care what the consequences were as long as he could look himself in the mirror.
Despite nearly losing his life, Linc had never seen things in such clear shades of black and white.
But he had started to now.
âAnyway,â Bart said, âmy life is in shambles. Howâs yours?â
And it was funny. It was at that precise moment that Linc had a revelation. He was mad as hell about whathad happened with Marley, but he had the power to change thingsâ¦if he really, truly, honestly wanted to.
âYou know,â he said softly, âI think my lifeâs going to turn out just fine.â
âSo youâre okay with the fact that Marleyâs going to work for another company?â
âWhat?â
Bart looked as surprised by his outburst as Linc was.
âYou didnât know about it?â
âStart explaining. Now.â
Bartâs brows sank down. âMarleyâs brother found her another job. Sheâs going to do PR for one of the associate sponsors.â
âLike hell she will.â
And for the first time Bart smiled. âSo you do care for her.â
Linc drew up in surprise.
âDonât bother denying it, Linc. I can tell by your eyes that you do.â
Holyâ
He was in love with her. How had that happened? When? Did she feel the same way, too?
Do you love me?
âYou do, donât you?â Bart asked.
âI think I do,â Linc admitted.
âThen go after her, man. Trust me. Thatâs what itâs all about. You more than anyone should know that. Thisââ he waved his hands. âRacing. Itâs all secondary to whatâs really importantâfamily.â
âIâve been a fool,â he said.
Bart laughed. âYou got that right.â

S HE WASNâT AT THE TRACK . Linc had known that. Still, he pulled off a top-ten finish. Frankly, he didnât careabout how he did, and as he caught a flight home on Double S Racingâs private plane, he recognized that that had been his problem his whole time.
Heâd been trying too hard.
Once heâd decided that he didnât care about how he finished, heâd been set free.
She was leaving Double S Racing.
To hell she was.
He called Gil on his cell phone and demanded a private meeting. His new team owner hadnât been pleased when Linc had ordered him to appear at his office the next morning, but Linc
