across the road sloshed a bucket of water on me.â
âGracious! Why would she do a thing like that?â
âOh, it was purely accidental,â said Mr. Sturgeon bitterly. âShe misjudged. Actually, she was bringing the water to revive Elmer Drimsdale.â
âWhat was wrong with Elmer Drimsdale?â
Mr. Sturgeon sighed deeply. âA basket fell on him,â he explained, âafter Miss Scrimmage shot it down. Mildred, that woman is going to kill someone one day!â
âYes, yes, dear,â his wife soothed. âIâm sure everything will be fine in the morning. Letâs not wake up Francisco. The poor child is just exhausted. Thank heaven for Bruno and Melvin!â she added.
âI wouldnât put it
quite
that way,â Mr. Sturgeon replied sourly. âThose two have finally gone too far. Tonight was the last straw.â
âNonsense. All they did was save a child. They didnât create the disturbance. They went out to try and stop it.â
Mr. Sturgeon opened his mouth and then closed it again. There was no use trying to explain to his wife about Bruno and Boots. Instead, he marched upstairs in search of a towel and dry pyjamas.
Chapter 14
No End to Miracles!
Bruno was sleeping in. Elmer, who had not slept a wink since the incident, could only marvel at his roommateâs tranquillity.
There was a knock at the door. Elmer answered it to admit the office messenger.
âGreetings, Alien Elmer,â the boy pronounced. âI am the bearer of a message from Earth.â
âFor me?â Elmer quavered.
âNope, for Walton. From Mission Control.â
Elmer breathed a deep sigh of relief. âBruno, wake up. Thereâs a message for you from Mr. Sturgeon.â
Bruno rolled over and yawned. âIâm too tired. Heâll have to wait.â
âOh no, he wonât,â said the messenger. âThe place is crawling with cops.â
Bruno bounded out of bed and began to dress.
* * *
âI just
knew
that you and your unsavoury friend had to be behind that uproar last night,â growled George. âThis came for you.â He handed Boots a message from the office.
âDoesnât bother me a bit,â shrugged Boots with as much false confidence as he could muster. âI intend to put the blame squarely where it belongs â on you.â
âYou wouldnât dare!â cried George, but Boots was already out the door and gone.
He ran full tilt to the Faculty Building, where he narrowly avoided another collision: Bruno was running from the other direction.
âAre you as scared as I am?â asked Boots.
âMe?
Scared?
â lied Bruno. âNever worry about what you canât avoid, I always say.â He cleared his throat. âI hear there were cops here this morning.â
âOh no!â moaned Boots. âExpelled
and
arrested.â
âItâs only our first offence,â Bruno offered hopefully. âMaybe weâll just get bawled out.â
âI hope I
do
get arrested,â said Boots grimly. âIâd like to have iron bars between me and The Fish. When Cathy dumped that water on his head â¦â He shuddered â then grinned and added, âI just about cheered!â
âAnd when Francisco asked if he was The Fish ⦠We may be in big trouble,â chuckled Bruno, âbut it sure was funny! And Miss Scrimmage shooting at the balloon â¦â
âAnd the way it conked Elmer Drimsdale!â howled Boots.
âAnd then that looney from the UFO Society called The Fish an old geezer!â screeched Bruno.
âAnd now The Fish is going to kill us!â screamed Boots.
âAnd the cops are after us!â moaned Bruno.
The laughter died abruptly as the boys were jolted from the hilarious past into the uncomfortable present.
âWhy put it off?â said Boots sadly. âWeâd better get in
