do that. Iâm gonna feel like itâs my fault. Like I gave you the idea.â
âYou didnât,â Elke said. âIâve been thinking about it for a long time. My mom told me that if I win the talent show, sheâs going to leave my dad. Weâre going to take that Hummer and drive to Los Angeles for me to try and make it as a singer and actress.â
âWow,â said Richard. âSheâd leave your dad if you won?â
âAre you serious?â Julia asked.
âYes.â
âShe
told
you that?â Paul asked. âShe didnât
ask
you?â
âShe
told
me,â Elke said, âand I donât want to leave my dad.â
âYour mom would actually do that?â Julia asked. âMy mom would never force me to do something I didnât want to do.â
âMy mom wanted to be famous when she was younger,â Elke told them. âSo when it didnât happen, she decided that she would make
me
famous. I guess itâs almost as good.â
âSo what are you going to do?â Julia asked. âHow are you going to tell her youâre going to ditch the show?â
âIâm not going to tell her,â Elke said. âIâm just not going to show up. Iâll send my parents to the show and tell them Iâll be there after I walk my dog. Then I wonât come. She wonât be able to do anything about it.â
âSheâs gonna freak out,â Paul said.
âI know,â said Elke. âBut I canât tell her. Not to her face.â
âWhy donât you just come to the talent showand sing bad on purpose?â Richard suggested. âThen youâll lose.â
âNot a bad idea, Raccoon,â Paul said.
âI canât do that,â Elke said. âI wish I could.â
It was quiet for a minute while they let it all sink in.
âHey,â Paul finally said, âif Elke ditches the talent show, one of
us
has a good chance to win it. Maybe I should just play âWipeoutâ after all.â
âI thought you were so anxious to stick it to the Man,â Elke said.
âOh, yeah,â Paul said, snapping his fingers.
âWell, I know one thing for sure,â Julia whispered. âMy group isnât going to win either way. The Beach Babes are awful.â
âIf I win,â Richard said, âIâm going to sell the car and give the money to
you
, Elke. Because you would have won for sure.â
âThatâs sweet, Richard,â Elke said. âBut if you win, you keep the prize. You will have earned it.â
At that moment, Mrs. Marottaâs voice boomed out across the multipurpose room.
âWhere is Richard Ackoon?â she hollered. âHeâs up next! The Beach Babes on deck, and The BluffTones on double deck. Where is JakePerelmuter? Coleman Verburg? Letâs go, people! This is rehearsal time, not social hour!â
Paul quickly got down on one knee and gathered Elke, Julia, and Richard around him.
âOkay, whatever we said here is secret, right?â he told them. âNothing leaves this room. Got it?â
The four of them put their hands on top of one anotherâs like a team before the big game.
âGot it.â

A Million-to-One Shot
âAttention. Flight 117 to Los Angeles has been canceled. We regret any inconvenience⦠.â
Justin Chanda was having a
bad
day.
Oh, sure, he was a mega-selling recording artist with millions of fans, three Grammy Awards, his own clothing line, and enough money in the bank that he wouldnât have to work another day in his life. But right now, waiting in line to buy a corn muffin in Tulsa International Airport, none of those things mattered.
After meeting with his lawyer in New York that morning, Justin had been heading back home to California. His connecting flight to Chicago had been diverted to Oklahoma because of badweather. As he sipped a cup of
