tell?â Paul said.
âCross my heart and hope to die,â Richard said.
âIf you tell, worms are going to crawl into your body,â Paul said. âTheyâll live in your intestines.â
âWe wonât tell,â the others said.
âOkay, hereâs the secret,â Paul whispered. âWeâre gonna play âStacyâs Mom.ââ
âGet
out
!â Elke said, punching him on the arm.
âItâs true,â Paul insisted.
The others collapsed into giggles.
âReally?â asked Julia. âIsnât that the song they said you werenât allowed to play?â
âYup.â
âThen why are you going to play it?â asked Julie.
âBecause we like it,â Paul said, âand because we want to stick it to the Man.â
âWhat man?â asked Richard. âMrs. Marotta isnât a man.â
âYou know,
the Man
,â said Paul. âThe grown-ups. The judges. Authority. The censors. People who try to tell you what to do and how to run your life.â
â
Thatâs
the Man?â asked Richard.
âYou learn fast, Raccoon.â said Paul.
âArenât you worried that youâre going to get in trouble?â asked Julia.
âSure, Iâm worried,â Paul said. âIâm no rebel. I never did anything like this before.â
âReverend Mercun is going to freak out, you know,â Julia said. âHeâll probably pull the plug on your amps in the middle of the song.â
âLet him,â Paul said. âMaybe that will get us on the TV news.â
âYou wonât win the talent show if you do that, you know,â Elke pointed out. âTheyâll disqualify The BluffTones.â
âI donât care,â Paul replied. âDoes it even matter? Everybody knows youâre gonna win, anyway.â
âThatâs not true!â Elke protested.
âOh, please,â Paul said. âSure itâs true. Youâre the most talented kid in town. Everybody knows that.â
Elke was about to say something, but she stopped. She looked like she couldnât decide whether or not to tell them something.
âCan I tell
you
guys a secret?â she finally said.
The others leaned forward.
âGo ahead,â Julia whispered.
âI donât want to win,â Elke said.
âWhat?â Paul said, flabbergasted. âAre you kidding me? Why not? Youâll get that cool car. Even if you canât drive it, you could sell it. Itâs worth thousands of dollars.â
âYouâre going to be famous, Elke,â Julia told her. âEverybody says so. Youâre going to be the next Justin Chanda.â
Elke sighed and shook her head.
âI donât want to be famous,â she told them. âMy
mom
wants me to be famous. I just want to sing. I love to sing. But I donât want to be a celebrity. I donât want to have people following me around all the time, taking pictures and bothering me. Having to get my hair done all the time. I wish I had your courage, Paul.â
âMy courage?â Paul said. âWhat do you mean?â
âYou know, the courage to stick it to the Man.â
âWhoâs the Man?â asked Richard.
âMy mom is the Man,â Elke explained.
âYour mom is a man?â asked Richard.
âNo silly,â Elke said. âMy mom tells me what to do. At least until Iâm eighteen.â
âSo how could you stick it to the man, anyway?â asked Paul.
âI could just not show up,â Elke said. âI could ditch the whole talent show. That would show her.â
âWhat?!â Julia said. âAre you serious? Would you actually do that?â
âMaybe,â Elke said. âShhhh. If my mom finds out Iâm even thinking about this, sheâll kill me.â
âItâs a bad idea,â Paul said, shaking his head. âI hope you wonât
