his gaze never leaving hers.
Mal dragged her leg up along his hip and he plunged deeper. The position sent a strange current through her and she closed her eyes and focused on the spot where they were joined. His rhythm was smooth and even and Amy felt herself dancing close to the edge. It was a strange sensation, as if she wasn’t in control of her reactions.
He shifted again and the intensity of her desire was like an electric shock. And then, out of nowhere, her body spasmed, deep and powerful. Mal stopped, her reaction surprising him. But then she whispered his name and in a single thrust, he took her over the edge.
The rest happened in a blur of pleasure and astonishment. This had never happened to her before, this perfect end to a perfect act. The orgasm seemed to come from deep inside her and it went on forever.
The entire trip had been filled with new experiences, but this was a memory that would never fade from her mind.
And in six days, that was all Amy would have of Mal, too.
    * * *
“L ESSON NUMBER ONE ,” Mal said, holding up his ice ax. “Arresting a fall.”
Amy’s eyes went wide. “Have you forgotten that I’m not the most coordinated person? If this trip includes the opportunity to fall, I will do it in spectacular fashion.”
“It’s not so much fall as slide, ” Mal said. “We’ll be walking on a steep pitch, and if you slip you can slide a long way down if you don’t have the means to stop yourself. That won’t actually happen because I’m going to rope you to me, but you still need to learn to stop yourself. Your second line of defense is your crampons.” He pointed to the metal spikes she had strapped to her boots. “If you have too much speed they won’t help, but at the start of a slide, they can, if you think quickly.”
“Who came up with that name?” Amy asked. “Crampon. It sounds like a feminine hygiene product. Why not just call them spikes or something more...masculine?”
He gave her a scolding look. “This is serious stuff, Amy. No joke. Everything I tell you now might save your life someday. You wanted an adventure, this is what comes with it.”
“Yes, sir,” she said. She gave him a playful salute and focused her attention on what he was saying.
Mal had taught at least a hundred classes in mountaineering and he had his talking points down pat. But he’d never had such a distracting student. He loved watching her work through each exercise, admiring her pretty face and tempting body. Even with the layers of clothing, he could still admire the sweet curves he’d enjoyed the night before.
Once she’d mastered walking in crampons, roped into her harness, he moved on. “These are your poles,” he said. “They’ll help with balance, but you’ll also use them to test the stability of the snow in front of you. We haven’t had a lot of snow yet this year, but you never know when you’ll come across a crevasse in the ice.”
“You have crevasses on this glacier?” she asked.
“There are crevasses on every glacier. This one is pretty well tramped so we’ll probably be able to see them, but the danger is always there.”
“Great,” she muttered. “If I don’t fall down the mountain, I’ll fall into the mountain.”
Mal couldn’t help but laugh. He knew he ought to keep a professional demeanor, but she did manage to keep this experience interesting. He’d always taught very serious students, those who hoped someday to make summit bids on some of the world’s highest mountains. Amy was a novice and would probably stay a novice for the rest of her life. There would be no Mount Everests in her future.
“There is one more thing,” he said.
“Oh, good. Another way I can kill myself on this little holiday. Do tell.”
“Avalanches.” Mal reached down into his pack and handed her an avalanche transponder. “Clip this to your jacket. At the very first hint of an avalanche, reach for it and turn it on.”
“Will there be an avalanche? You
