position.’
Adam saw her shiver but didn’t reply, both of them watching as a sleek, silver train moved slowly out from the station. Only when it had disappeared beneath the wide concrete bridge on which they were standing did she speak again.
‘You’re in love with her, aren’t you?’
‘Yes,’ Adam told her. ‘I have been for years, I think, ever since I met her. Do you remember I told you about Foxdens, the big house next door to my grandparents in Devon, and the old man who used to grow the dark roses, Mr Rudge?’
    ‘Of course.’
‘Jasmine used to stay at The Gatehouse, which shares a driveway with Foxdens. That’s where I first saw her, walking in the old man’s garden in a white summer dress. She was so beautiful, so free – or that’s what I thought. He used to spank her, for fun.’
    ‘The bastard!’
‘No, no, for her fun as much as his own, although Christ alone knows how they managed to come to that arrangement. She’d pick his flowers and generally be naughty, you know how it works, and then he’d take her indoors and spank her, OTK, and panties down too. I was fascinated.’
‘I bet you were! What a dirty old bastard, though, even if it was consensual. How old was he?’
‘I’m not sure. In his seventies, I think.’
    ‘Was it just spanking?’
‘Mainly, although he used to have a good feel while he was doing it, and she’s told me that he made her toss him off too, and suck his cock. She was a virgin, though, until our first time, up on the moor above the house. And for me, after that, somehow no other woman ever seemed to match up.’
‘I can imagine, although I must say, you don’t seem to have any trouble enjoying yourself with other women.’
‘That’s different. I’ve never understood why most people seem to want to be exclusive. From a genetic perspective, yes, because there’s an evolutionary pressure to bring up your own children rather than somebody else’s, but we’re not swinging through the trees any more. People ought to learn to get over their jealousy, which is hardly a noble emotion. Not only that, but anyone, man or woman, who says people other than their partner have no appeal is a liar. A pretty bottom or a nice pair of boobs triggers an instinctive reaction, and that’s simple biology. So yes, I’m in love with Jasmine, but I still like to play with other women. That’s especially true with Caroline. I know she’s yours, but it’s fun to play.’
‘Thanks. That’s why you get to play, because you understand, and Caroline is mine. That’s what I’m trying to say, really, that I don’t think Jasmine could ever be yours in the same way – or anybody else’s for that matter.’
‘She’s spent a lifetime trying to break away from other people’s control,’ Adam explained. ‘Underneath, who knows?’
‘Would you like her to be yours?’
‘Yes,’ he admitted, ‘although I’m prepared to compromise, and you will always be welcome to share.’
He gave her a bright smile as he finished, breaking the slightly melancholy mood of their conversation, then clapped his hands together as he turned towards the city centre.
‘Let’s see what Lille has to offer in the way of food, then, and perhaps nightlife?’
‘Don’t forget we have another meeting tomorrow,’ Elaine pointed out.
‘I’m sure we can cope,’ he told her. ‘Do you suppose there are any kinky clubs?’
‘On a Thursday night?’ she queried. ‘I doubt it, and besides, I wouldn’t dare.’
‘I don’t suppose we’d be very likely to run into the Pointe Verte or Haardt Biomass people, and if we did, they’d be in the same position as us. Hmm … maybe that little dark secretary likes to be spanked? She was in stockings – real ones. I saw her suspender straps when she crossed her legs.’
Elaine laughed and, to Adam’s surprise, took his hand as they began to walk. The maze of flyovers and railway lines among which their hotel was situated quickly gave way
