Chapter One

Kali sat at the table in the bar, her
stale beer and half-eaten fried food setting in front of her, with her arms
crossed on the surface and her eyes riveted to the stage at the front. Her
friend Chris was up on the stage, his fingers expertly strumming on his
acoustic guitar while his beautiful melodic voice lulled the room. His eyes
remained closed as his lips moved, flooding the once loud bar with haunting
tales of heartbreak and lost love. Kali knew the secret behind every song and
the tale behind every woman in them. She’d known Chris for five years now, and
had been following his music career before that. He was a struggling musician
who put his heart and soul into his music but had still yet to make a big
break. But he loved what he did and it showed in every chord.
    “Earth to Kali,” Kali’s friend
Jasmine said from the table.
    “Hmm? What?”
    “You’re in a trance.”
“I’m in my happy place. Go away.”
Chris finished his song and the bar
erupted into applause. Kali and Jasmine joined in. Chris smiled, saying, “Thank
you! That was one of mine. You can get it on my CD, which is up here on the
table in front, if you’d like.”
“Why don’t you just fuck him and
get it over with?” Jasmine asked.
“Because we’re not like that. We’re
just friends. It’s the music. You know that.”
“I know that you’re raping him with
your eyes.”
“Acoustic music turns me on,” she
said simply. “It has nothing to do with him. It could be a three-hundred pound
guy up there playing acoustic and if it were good, I’d stare the same way.”
    “Mm-hmm,” Jasmine said doubtfully.
“Oh shush and enjoy the music.”
The truth was, Chris was an
attractive man. His shaggy brown hair fell in his gorgeous blue eyes when he
played. And the way his face lit up when he smiled always made Kali feel weak
in the knees.
Jasmine checked out about an hour
later, but Kali stayed for the entire four hours Chris was playing. He was beat
by the end of the show and it showed on his face as he began packing up his
stuff.
    “Need any help?” Kali asked,
walking up onto the stage.
“If you’d like, that’d be great.
Thanks.”
They got all his equipment packed
up and into his car. He turned to face her with a smile. “Thanks for staying
the whole time.”
“You know it’s my pleasure. I enjoy
it. I saw you sold a CD tonight! That’s great.”
“I know,” he said with a short
laugh. “I also saw you nearly harassed the poor guy into buying it for his
wife.”
    Kali shrugged sheepishly. “He’ll
love it when he gets it home.”
    “You’re impossible. But I love
you.” He gave her a hug. She returned it eagerly. His hand ran up and down her
back. He kissed the side of her head before letting her go. She was a little
surprised by how empty she felt when he was no longer touching her. “See you
tomorrow?”
    “Absolutely,” she said. “I wouldn’t
miss it for the world.”
The truth was, Kali really wouldn’t
miss it for the world. She had skipped classes to see him before. She came out
once while she was sick and her doctor had told her she shouldn’t be out and
about. She had been to almost every show he’d had in the past five years. She
considered him her best guy friend. That didn’t stop her mind from playing over
the things Jasmine had said or the way she felt when he touched her. She tried
not to think about it because it usually gave her a headache. She didn’t want
to feel about Chris that way; it would complicate things too much. She was much
happier having a guy friend than a boyfriend. But she knew she was attracted to
him. Deep down inside, she knew it. All she could keep doing was denying it and
hope that eventually, it would go away.

Chapter Two

“So what happened after I left last
night?” Jasmine asked Kali.
“Chris finished the show, I helped
him take his stuff to the car, and we said good-bye. Honestly, Jas. Not all of
us hump someone just
