Give Me a Break
Toni Moore rarely allowed her Dance Divas elite team a week off from rehearsal. There were simply too many routines to learn, too many costumes to fit, not to mention an endless list of competitions from coast-to-coast. But this time, as she contemplated the calendar tacked on the bulletin board outside studio 1, Toni drew a huge red âXâ across Presidentsâ Week in February.
âNo way! No dance for a whole week?â Rochelle asked her teacher as she passed her in the hallway. âIs the world coming to an end?â
Toni sighed. Rochelle knew just how to push her buttons. âI simply decided to give us allâespecially myselfâa much-needed break since school will be closed here in New Jersey.â She raised an eyebrow. âUnless of course youâd prefer to be in the studio those days practicing your pointe technique?â
Rochelle shook her head. âNope. Iâm good with it!â
She rushed off to the dressing room to share the news with the rest of her teammates.
âReally? A whole week off?â Scarlett cheered. âThatâs amazing! Maybe I can convince Mom to take us to Florida for some sun and fun.â
âYeah, Disney World!â her little sister, Gracie, piped up.
Bria checked the calendar on her phone. âGreat. I can get in some extra studying for my algebra test, start my science fair project, and write my English paper on
A Midsummer Nightâs Dream
.â
âSeriously? Youâre free from Toni and all you want to do is study?â Rochelle asked her.
âI donât
want
to study. I
have
to study,â Bria said, correcting her.
âNot everyone can be as naturally brilliant as you are, Rock,â Scarlett teased her.
âOr as naturally beautiful,â Rochelle replied, laughing.
âI think Iâll tag along with my mom to Hollywood.â Liberty suddenly jumped into the conversation. She was polishing her nails a perfect shade of Ballet Slipper Pink. âSheâs choreographing a new music video.â
âIs it for someone famous?â Bria asked. Libertyâs mom, Jane Montgomery, was one of the biggest choreographers in the music biz.
Liberty grinned. âIsnât it always?â
Rochelle rolled her eyes. âHere comes the name-dropping,â she whispered to Scarlett.
âBeyoncé was just saying how much she adored my momâs last video for Ariana Grande . . . ,â Liberty bragged. âBut I think the one Mom did for Britney was far more creative.â
âSo sheâs choreographing Beyoncé? Or Ariana? Or Britney?â Gracie said, jumping up and down. âCan I go, too?â
Liberty patted the little girl on the head. âNo, Gracie, dear. Itâs only for professionals.â
âSo how come your mom lets you go?â Gracie protested. âYouâre not a professional.â
Liberty frowned. âBecause I act like a professional, thatâs why.â
âAnd because she nags her mom day and night till she finally agrees to take her if sheâll just stop whining,â Rochelle said.
âI can whine,â Gracie said. âScoot says Iâm really good at it. If I do, will you take me?â
Scarlett nodded. âSheâs right. Sheâs a professional whiner.â
âSee?â Gracie pleaded with Liberty. âPretty please?â
Rochelle chuckled. âAw, come on, Liberty, give the kid a break. Call up Beyoncé and tell her youâre bringing a friend. Oh, waitâyoudonât actually have Beyoncéâs number, do you?â
âAt least I have somewhere exciting to go,â Liberty insisted, pointing a finger in Rochelleâs face. âWhat are you going to do with your week off? Sit and watch the grass grow? Change your baby brotherâs diapers? Itâs not like your family has a lot of extra money to go on a vacation.â
Rochelle stood up. âYou take that
