in a show called
Your Lucky Stars.
And he saw her again acting in the movie the director had made in Bogusville,
A Binding Friendship.
Selby lay on the lounge in Bonnieâs trailer listening to music. Someone delivered a plate of wonderful food and Bonnie gave half of it to Selby.
âI
am
in Dreamland,â Selby thought. âI hope it takes a year to make this movie.â
That evening Bonnie sat next to Selby practising her lines for the next day.
âWhat kind of man are you?â she yelled. Then she tried whispering it through clenched teeth. âWhat ⦠kind ⦠of man ⦠are you? Is money all that matters to you?â
âShe sends shivers up my spine just listening to her,â thought Selby.
âTomorrowâs your big scene,â Bonnie said to Selby. âHow do you like that, poochipoo? At least you donât have to talk. So you wonât get nervous like real actors.â
âAre you kidding?â Selby thought. âI get so nervous that I could wet my pants â if I had pants, that is. I mean, just because Iâm a dog doesnât mean that I donât get scared.â
Bonnie turned the page.
âYou killed him!â she yelled.
âOh, good, someone gets killed,â Selby thought. âThis is getting exciting. I wonder who gets it? I hope itâs that Dino creep.â
âYou killed my dog, you scum!â Bonnie wailed.
âHey,â Selby thought, âa dog gets killed. There must be another dog in this film besides me.â
âYou killed my dog, you scum!â Bonnie wailed again. âYou killed Selby! How could you do this?!â
âSelby?â Selby thought. âThereâs got to be some mistake. I canât get killed. The movieâs only just started.â
Bonnie turned to Selby and put her arm around him.
âOh, Selby, itâs been so good having you here with me,â she said. âIâll be sorry to see you go.â
âGo? I donât want to go,â Selby thought. âWhere am I going?â
âYou killed Selby!â Bonnie yelled again.
âI guess that answers that,â Selby thought. âI was just getting into this film and now Iâm history. Theyâll be sending me home before I know it.â
That night Selby lay on the floor of Bonnieâs trailer unable to sleep. He got up and started reading a copy of the script.
âOh, great,â he thought, after heâd read a few pages, âDino runs me over with his car. I donâteven die in a fight or anything. Just get run over and then thatâs the end of me. Great.â
The next day was one of the worst days of Selbyâs life. His death scene was the first scene of the day. Artie Schotz made him bark and chase after Dinoâs car. Suddenly, the car swerved to miss a hole in the street and ran Selby over. Of course he wasnât really run over. There was the squeal of brakes and the camera switched back to Bonnieâs face as she screamed, âYou killed Selby!â
â
Cut
! Thatâs perfect!â the director said. âOkay, guys, somebody ring the chauffeur and letâs get Selby to the airport. Sorry, old boy,â he said, patting Selby. âYou did a great job but itâs over, pooch.â
âGreat job, my paw,â Selby thought. âYouâre the one who made up this story, why did you have to go and get me killed? It would be a much better movie if I lived. People love dogs.â
Everyone gathered around and gave Selby pats and hugs before they put him in the limo to go to the airport. He could feel tears forming in his eyes as the car pulled away.
âSo that was it,â Selby thought. âMy big break and itâs over. Iâll never get another chance like this one. But what can I do?â
Selby sat there way, way in the back â because this was the longest limo that Selby had ever seen â and wondered what he could
