Iâm
sooooo
nervous with that big camera pointing at me.â
âHere, Selby,â Bonnie said. âHey, look at that. He came right over and sat down. This is one smart dog, Artie. And youâre right, he does have a sort of human look in his eyes.â
âThatâs what I said,â the director said. âOkay, letâs roll.â
As Selby watched, Dino drove into the main street, got out of his car, took off his sunglasses and smiled. Bonnie Blake walked over to him.
âWhat are you doing here?â she demanded.
âYou know very well what Iâm doing here,â Dino answered. âNow get out of my way, Iâve got work to do.â
âDo you really think these people want to be a part of your theme park? Do you think they like you?â
âOf course they donât like me. But they like my money,â Dino said. âWhat do you care? Youâre not from this town. These people arenât clever city people like you and me. Thesepeople are uneducated and stupid. Why else would they be living in this awful place?â
âNow, hang on,â Selby thought, âweâre not stupid. And Bogusville is a nice place.â
âNow you listen to me â¦â Bonnie started.
âYou tell him, Bonnie!â Selby thought.
âOkay, so theyâre stupid and ignorant and they smell bad.â
âNow, hang on a tick, Bon,â Selby thought.
âAnd theyâre sneaky and lazy. Theyâre lots of things,â Bonnie went on.
âHold the show, Bonnie,â Selby thought. âEvery time you open your mouth itâs getting worse!â
âWhat you donât understand,â Bonnie said, âis that a town is more than just a town. A town is people. Real, living, breathing people with their own hopes and dreams. Theyâre not just
things
that you can buy. Theyâre not like tissues that you can pull out of the box, blow your nose on, and then throw away.â
Selby watched as Bonnie ran through every emotion heâd ever seen. At first she sounded like she was just explaining something but suddenly she was pleading and then threatening. Thenthere was a long silence as her eyes went from angry little dots to big, wide eyes filled with tears.
âWhat an actress,â Selby thought. âSheâs just like a real person â only better. That tissue thing really got me. Oh, sheâs
sooooooo
wonderful.â
âThe problem with you,â Dino said, âis that you donât know whatâs good for you â or for the stupid people of Dumsville.â
With this Dino turned and walked away.
âThat dirty guy,â Selby thought. âI canât let him get away with that! I donât care what the script says, Iâm going to bite that boofhead into next week!â
With this, Selby growled a deep growl that suddenly grew to fierce barking and then took off after Dino.
âHey, Selby! Stop it!â Dino yelled.
âCut!â the director cried, and Selby came running back to Bonnie, wagging his tail.
âHey, that was great!â the director said. âIt was almost as though Selby knew what was happening. I reckon that dog could act the pants off both of you.â
That afternoon, Bonnie took Selby behind the set to where the starsâ trailers were parked. There were three of them: a huge long one that said âBonnieâ on the side, another big one that said âDinoâ., and then a little dog house on wheels that had âSelbyâ painted on the roof.
âYours is tiny,â Bonnie said, âbut donât worry because youâre going to be in my trailer with me. Youâre my dog in the movie so youâre going to be my dog here on the set too.â
âThatâs sweet of her,â Selby thought.
