found out what he wanted and got him out of here, the sooner she could track down Brady and see what their future held.
Because she wanted to keep the upper hand for as long as she could, Sam stepped behind her neatly organized desk and sat her bag at her feet, but did not take a seat until her door was firmly closed and Miles was seated across from her.
“Now,” she said getting comfortable in her leather chair. “What is this impromptu visit about?”
Miles eased forward in his chair. “As I told you on the phone, I have reason to believe one of our main competitors is here or will be on his way.”
“Yes,” Sam agreed, trying to keep the irritation out of her tone. “And, as I told you, I can handle it and I would call you if I thought something was up.”
“I’m also taking this opportunity to check outthe whole resort,” Miles went on as if she hadn’t spoken. “I was shocked when I heard you were going ahead with some rather expensive plans. We really don’t have spa money in our budget.”
Deep breaths, she told herself, deep breaths. In, out. “We will have a nice return on our investment. Trust me. And if there was a problem that I couldn’t handle, such as a competitor coming in, I would’ve called you.”
Miles stared at her for what seemed like eternity before nodding. “Let me see what’s going on with the spa area.”
“Fine.” She came to her feet. “But we have to hurry. I have a busy schedule.”
She opened her door with a jerk, the not-so-subtle way of letting her brother know she was not happy. After she gestured for him to go ahead, she closed and locked her door behind her.
A bit of her tension eased as they entered the open lobby and Brady stepped off the elevator looking extremely sexy in khaki shorts and a green polo.
She turned to her brother. “Excuse me just one minute.”
With a smile and a quick stride, Sam made her way across the marble floor. “Hey, are you going out?”
Brady closed the gap between them. “I was going for a walk on the beach. Care to join me?”
“You don’t know how much I’d love to, but I have something I have to take care of first.” She stood on her toes and kissed him on the cheek. “I’ll come find you later.”
“What the hell is going on?”
Samantha jumped around at the booming sound of Miles’s voice. “Excuse me?”
“Miles,” Brady said.
Sam threw a look over her shoulder. “You know my brother?”
“Oh, he knows me all right,” Miles confirmed. “He probably knew you, too, before he ever stepped foot here.”
Samantha’s heartbeat kicked up. From the tension surrounding her, the tone in the two male voices and the look of murder in both their eyes, she had a feeling this scene was about to get really ugly.
“Let’s all go back to my office,” she said quietly.
“I’d like to talk to you alone,” Brady said.
Miles laughed. “I’m sure you would, Stone. Let me guess, you’ve been working my sister in the romance department trying to get in on some company secrets?”
Her once-beating heart dropped. “What?”
Brady took her arm and turned her around. “Sam, please, let me talk to you alone.”
The pleading look in his eyes made her want to go with him, to hear what exactly was going on. But the logical side of her knew whatever he had to say could possibly destroy them.
Oh, God. The baby.
No, she could not get upset. She had to remain calm. There was someone depending on her now.
“Don’t listen to him,” Miles said. “He’s a liar.”
Sam turned back around. “You have no right to talk to me about liars. You and Father kept secrets from me from day one on this job and if I want to talk to Brady, I will.”
“Do you know who he really is?” Miles asked.
“His father used to own this resort.” Miles paused when the elevator dinged and a couple stepped off. “Let’s step over here out of earshot of our guests.”
Shaky legs carried Sam around the corner with the men. They
