they have all the answers, for everybody, all the time.â
He could recite the list of his failings and flaws, but sheâd heard them all before...and diffused them, one by one.
âNews flash, Preston. You donât have all the answers.â
âI never said I did.â
Max got up and crossed the room, placed her palms on the arms of his chair and gave it a shake. âYou feel something for that woman. Donât bother to deny it, because Alyssa is a sharp kid. If she got it into her head that Billie is mother material, itâs because youâve been sending subliminal messages.â The agent shook the chair again before straightening. âGo ahead, tell me Iâm wrong!â
âJeez, Max. The truth is I barely know her. Iâm working on her bike. She might build me a website, andââ
Max dropped onto the sofa again. âWhat do you mean, might?â
âWell, like I said, she hung up on me.â
The woman hid behind her hands. âI donât know whether youâre more exasperating than dense or the other way around.â She came out of hiding. âDid you see samples of her work?â
âYeah...â
âIs she any good?â
âI guess...â
âThen hire her. And donât look at me that wayâit really is that simple. Sheâs a professional. If she wants your business, sheâll overlook your little temper tantrum. And as you get to know her better, youâll figure out if what you feel for her is something worth pursuing or not.â
âWhat if I considered all of that?â
âDid you?â
âNo, but if I had, I might have come to the conclusion that it would be selfish, starting something with her that I canât finish.â
âWhy canât you?â
Noah threw his hands in the air. âYou of all people know why!â
âIâve said it before, Iâll say it again. Other people in your situation found ways to live normal lives. If thatâs what you want, youâll find a way to get it.â
Noah sighed. âTalk about exasperating.â
âSomebody has to keep you straight.â Max pointed at the phone. âCall her.â
âItâs nine oâclock.â
âSheâs a businesswoman. Believe me, sheâs awake and working.â
âIâll call her in the morning.â
âChicken.â
When Max was right, she was right. âI need to sleep on it,â he hedged, âso I wonât put my foot in my mouth again.â
The agent got up and grabbed her jacket. âYouâll do what you wantâyou always do.â
And when she was wrong, she was wrong. He hadnât done anything he wanted to do since agreeing to testify against OâMalley.
âMy advice?â she said. âThe longer you put it off, the harder itâll be.â
Nodding, Noah walked her to the door. âIâll think about it.â
âIâve worked with a lot of guys in this program who were built to live alone.â She jabbed a forefinger into his chest. âYou, my friend, are not one of them.â
âYeah, well, thatâs the price to pay for living a lie.â
âOh, give me a break. Iâll bet full disclosure causes more divorces than anything else. Even if you had a normal history, you wouldnât tell Billie every thing. And she wonât tell you all the details about her past, either. Get over yourself. You like her. Admit it. Give her a call.â Max gestured toward the living room behind him. âYouâre safe here, so take a chance at happiness, why donât you?â
âIâll think about it,â he said again.
âYou know Iâm right.â
He was fortunate to have a friend like Max, and would have told her so...if she hadnât closed the door in his face.
Noah locked up and returned to the living room. Another glance at his watch told him only five minutes had
