for one thing.â
âYouâre practically living on top of me now, and Iâve enjoyed every minute. So whatâs the other thing?â
âMoney. I canât make a move until the house in Philly sells.â
âI have some savings. Use it now as your down payment, and repay me when your place sells.â
âI couldnât ask you to do that.â
âYou didnât ask.â
Troy stared at her for a long moment, then said, âYouâve got a heart of gold,â and headed down the hall.
âWhere are you going? Supperâs almost ready.â
âTo Ikeâs Bikes, thatâs where.â
âTroy...you had better be kidding....â
âCalm down. Iâm not an idiot. Iâm joking. But Iâm no saint, either. If I thought for one minute you cared about himâand he hurt youâIâd have no problem making him sorry.â
And Troy would, too, as evidenced by the tongue-lashing heâd given Chuck on the day of the divorce.
âCall me when supperâs on the table. Meanwhile, Iâll be in the living room, surfing the net for dirt on Noah Preston.â
For a reason she couldnât explain, Billie hoped his search, like Budâs, would be futile.
CHAPTER EIGHT
N OAH  HAD  READ  half  the newspaper before Max finally joined him in the living room.
âYou were gone so long,â he said drily, âI was considering charging you rent.â
âIngrate.â She plopped onto the sofa. âIâll have you know she brushed her teeth, said her prayers, and now? Sheâs fast asleep, so youâre welcome.â
Noah put down the newspaper. âYou were in there an awfully long time....â
âUh-huh. Talking about you...and the big spat with Billie.â
âWhat spat? And who even uses that word anymore?â
âMy sainted grandmother, whose shoes I hope to fill one day. And to answer your first question, Alyssa wasnât napping before dinner when you called Billie to give her a piece of your mind. As if you can afford to give even a sliver away.â
âBut...but Alyssa was asleep!â
âNot even close. The kid is miserable. Because she likes Billie. She thinks you like her, too. And now sheâs afraid you two will never get married, all on account of her fib.â
âMarried? Whereâd she get a cockamamie idea like that?â
âHey. Donât shoot the messenger. And who uses words like that one anymore?â
âWait....on account of her fib?â
âThat business about the allergy pill and how she didnât tell Billie youâd already given her one.â Max explained how Alyssa had wanted something sugary, and because the candy jar was empty, sheâd hoped the medication would satisfy her sweet tooth.
Noah heaved a heavy sigh. âI took one of those things once. They taste awful. Why would she want two?â
âBecause sheâs seven?â
He drove a hand through his hair. âSo why, when I gave Billie what for, did she not defend herself?â
âIf I know you, you didnât give her a chance.â
âI donât remember much about the conversation, except that she hung up on me. If she was so innocent, why would she do that?â
âOh, I dunno. Maybe because you can be intimidating when you want to be?â
âI hope you arenât calling me a bully, becauseââ
âSpare me,â Max said. âI know you better than just about anybody.â She sat back, fiddled with the throw pillow sheâd pulled onto her lap. âRemember a couple months ago when you asked me why Iâm still single?â
He nodded. âYou blamed the job. Long hours. Sometimes dangerous situations.â But even as he said it, Noah had a feeling Max was about to tell him the real reason.
âNone of that would matter, if I could find the right man. Instead of guys like you, who think
