harder against their holds on me.
“You shouldn’t be so loud, I warned you,” buzz cut spat just before lifting his arm and backhanding me across my temple. The force of the blow was excruciating. My vision blurred and I had just enough time to scream again before he hit me a second time and I blacked out.
    *****
I came to with a horrible headache. My hands were bound behind my back, and I was on a floor some place dark that smelled like the forest.
“She’s waking up, finally. I thought you killed her or something,” a deep voice said near me. I leaned away from the voice, and suddenly a cloth was pulled from my head. I had to squint at how bright it suddenly was in the room.
“Hey, hey, snap out of it! We need to ask you a few questions,” said a male voice. I recognized it as the voice of the guy with the buzz cut, the one who had kidnapped me.
I looked around at the barren space. It was a shack really. A dozen or so huge guys stood around the room, watching me.
“I don’t know anything, just let me go,” I said hoarsely. There was a collective rumble of laughter heard from around the room and I wanted nothing more than to be safe, at home, and oblivious about this world—not having to face it so starkly.
“I’d say you’re lying, again . You have Tarik and Roland’s scent all over you. It wouldn’t surprise me that those two decided to share a mate, they share just about everything else!”
More laughter from the surrounding group. I tried to control the fear that was slowly taking over. I couldn’t let it numb me. I had to think, I needed to get out of this situation in one piece.
“Where’s the pack’s den? I know for a fact you know that much at least,” buzz cut asked. I shook my head.
“I’ve never been to their…their den,” I said shakily. The guy’s nostrils flared and he growled.
“I don’t quite have patience for liars, tell us what we need to know and I won’t have to hurt you again,” he said menacingly. I cringed away from him, shrinking against the wall.
What I needed to do was buy some time.
    *****
“What would you do with that information anyways?” I asked and he flashed me a toothy grin that was in no way friendly.
“Simply overrun their pack when they least expect it. They are keen to your disappearance now and poor Tarik and Roland are running around with their tails caught between their legs searching for you. Their pack is split up, too, so we have the advantage. We’ll dwindle their numbers and push them out of our territory.”
The other wolves bristled with excitement and I wanted to slap this arrogant idiot. Who did he think he was anyway?
“Why would you need to know the location of their den if they aren’t even there ?” I said. “It sounds to me they could be close to wherever we are now and you all would be the ones ambushed and eradicated.”
The smug look on the guys face disappeared and was instantly replaced by hot fury.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about, you’re just a fucking female ,” he said. He spat on my face before slapping me, hard. The blow burned and I could feel the warm trickle of blood that seeped out of my cheek where my skin was cut. “Tell me where their den is!” he screamed in my face, his pack bristled, standing up, their stances aggressive and threatening.
The alpha lifted his arm to slap me again when there was a loud crash and the sound of snarling and growling. The room broke out into bedlam as wolves crashed in through the wide barnyard door and started pulling people out by any exposed limbs.
The enemy alpha and the other guy closest to me morphed. The alpha stayed inside as the other took off to join the fight as it moved outside. The large dark brown wolf paced back and forth in front of me, his eyes on the doors that hung off of their hinges ominously. I could hear the sounds of a huge pack fight outside and it didn’t sound pretty.
Suddenly the doors to the old shack were pushed
