Justin all the time back in Cali,â Maya said. âHeâd stand up at the top and, like, think about it for ten minutes before jumping. I like how you didnât even hesitate.â
Emily floated on her back and smiled. She couldnât help it: she gobbled up Mayaâs compliments like cheesecake.
Maya squirted Emily with water through her cupped hands. Some of it squirted right into her mouth. The creek water tasted gooey and almost metallic, nothing like chlorinated pool water. âI think me and Justin are going to break up,â Maya said.
Emily swam closer to the edge and stood up. âReally? Why?â
âYeah. The long-distance thing is too stressful. He calls me, like, all the time. Iâve only been gone for a few days, and heâs already sent me two letters!â
âHuh,â Emily answered, sifting her fingers through the murky water. Then something occurred to her. She turned to Maya. âDid you, um, put a note in my swim locker yesterday?â
Maya frowned. âWhat, after school? Noâ¦you walked me home, remember?â
âRight.â She didnât really think Maya had written the note, but things wouldâve been so much simpler if she had.
âWhat did the note say?â
Emily shook her head. âNever mind. It was nothing.â She cleared her throat. âYou know, I think I might break up with my boyfriend too.â
Whoa. Emily wouldnât have been any more surprised if a bluebird had just flown out of her mouth.
âReally?â Maya said.
Emily blinked water out of her eyes. âI donât know. Maybe.â
Maya stretched her arms over her head, and Emily caught sight of that scar on her wrist again. She looked away. âWell, fuck a moose,â Maya said.
Emily smiled. âHuh?â
âItâs this thing I say sometimes,â Maya said. âIt means⦠screw it !â She turned away and shrugged. âI guess itâs silly.â
âNo, I like it,â Emily said. âFuck a moose.â She giggled. She always felt funny swearingâas if her mom could hear her from their kitchen, ten miles away.
âYou totally should break up with your boyfriend, though,â Maya said. âKnow why?â
âWhy?â
âThat would mean weâd both be single.â
âAnd that means what?â Emily asked. The forest was very quiet and still.
Maya moved closer to her. âAnd that meansâ¦weâ¦can⦠have fun !â She grabbed Emily by the shoulder and dunked her under the water.
âHey!â Emily squealed. She splashed Maya back, ripping her whole arm through the water, creating a giant wave. Then she grabbed Maya by the leg and started tickling underneath her toes.
âHelp!â Maya screamed. âNot my feet! Iâm so ticklish!â
âIâve found your weakness!â Emily crowed, maniacally dragging Maya over to the waterfall. Maya managed to wrench her foot away and pounced on Emilyâs shoulders from behind. Mayaâs hands drifted up Emilyâs sides, then down to her stomach, where she tickled her. Emily squealed. She finally pushed Maya into a small cave in the rocks.
âI hope there are no bats in here!â Maya squealed. Beams of sunlight pierced through the caveâs tiny openings, making a halo around the top of Mayaâs sopping wet head.
âYou have to come in here,â Maya said. She held out her hand.
Emily stood next to her, feeling the caveâs smooth, cool sides. The sounds of her breathing echoed off the narrow walls. They looked at each other and grinned.
Emily bit her lip. This was such a perfect friend moment, it made her feel kind of melancholy and nostalgic.
Mayaâs eyes turned down in concern. âWhatâs wrong?â
Emily took a deep breath. âWellâ¦you know that girl who lived in your house? Alison?â
âYeah.â
âShe went missing. Right after
