Iâve missed you so much. Knowing that youâve been angry with me has been agony.â Her mother gave her a big hug.
âHello, Mother.â Avery quickly patted her back and moved away.
âDarling, please come in.â Her mother pulled her toward the living room and sat down on the sofa. She patted a spot next to her. âHave a seat. Whatâs new in your life?â
âThis isnât a social visit.â
âI realize that, Avery,â her mother said. âI know youâre still very upset with me.â
âThatâs putting it mildly. Quite frankly, I feel like I canât trust you, which is why Iâm here.â
Her father walked in at just that moment. âDad.â Avery rose and accepted his kiss on the cheek. Why was it so much easier for her to forgive her dad than her mother? Avery wondered. For some reason, she held her mother responsible for keeping this deception going so long. âI was just about to explain the reason for my visit.â
She watched his eyes widen with concern as he sat down opposite them. âMother,â Avery began, sitting back down, âI need to tell you something and I know this may hurt, but I felt I owed it to you to tell you where my head is at.â
âWhatever it is, Avery, you can just tell me,â her mother stated calmly.
Avery inhaled and released a long breath before proceeding. âIâve hired a private investigator to search for my birth parents and he received a copy of my original birth certificate today. Her name is Leahââ
âYou did what!â Veronica Roberts rose to her feet.
âI knowââ Avery began but her mother interrupted.
âHow could you do this to me?â Veronica shook her head in disbelief. âTo your father. Weâve given you a great life. Havenât we?â she asked, grasping Avery by the shoulders.
She lowered her lashes. âWell, yes, butâ¦â
âWeâre your parents,â Veronica cried. âNot them. Where was this Leah person when you were crying? Or teething? Where was she when you skinned your knee?â
Avery could feel her motherâs anguish and it caused hot tears to roll down her cheeks. Sheâd known it would hurt, but she hadnât realized just how deep the cut would go. It was as if she had just sliced open a newly healed wound.
âWeâre the ones that clothed you. Fed you. Loved you.â
âVeronica, stop it,â her father said and stepped in between the two women, but her mother was relentless.
âWas Leah at your first recital? Or your graduation? Why did you do this?â her mother shouted at her.
âBecause I had to,â Avery wailed, defending herself from her motherâs tirade. âI didnât do this to hurt you.â Avery choked back the tears. âBut I need to know where I came from.â
âThen go.â Her mother flung out her hand toward the door.
âMother, please,â Avery said, âplease, donât be upset with me.â
âJust go.â Her mother swept past her to the doorway, but not before giving one final blow. âGo find your birth parents, but I promise you it will not bring you any peace. It will bring you nothing but pain. Just like the pain youâve caused me.â She ran up the stairs.
âWhat have I done?â Avery asked, lowering herself to the couch.
âYouâre doing what you have to,â her father replied matter-of-factly. Heâd known this would hurt Veronica, but Avery had her mind made up. âYour mother is hurt, but in time, sheâll understand.â
âI donât know if sheâll ever forgive me for this, Dad,â Avery said, shaking her head. âYou saw her.â
âIn time, she will.â Her father came to her side and squeezed her shoulder. âYouâll see. Sheâs just hurt now, but give her time, sheâll come
