go.” Green eyes were blazing with fury as his friend glared at him. “The woman was so happy not ten minutes ago. Now she looks like her heart’s breaking.”
“I don’t need some woman faking that she likes what I’m doing to her,” he growled viciously, defending himself. He jumped to his feet, brushing bits of broken eggshell and yolk off his shirt. He pulled it over his head and threw it in the direction of the laundry room. “I can pay someone for that. Hell, I can go to Colt’s club any given night and find a sub wanting to play. There won’t be any faking it.”
Ryan shoved past Damien, all but butting him in the chest. “You’re a real fucking asshole.
I always suspected it. Peaches wouldn’t have been faking anything. Hell, when we told her that you’d probably have her tied up, with a toy up her butt within seconds of seeing her, we could see the idea excited the hell out of her. The damn scent of her filled the room. No woman could fake that.” A fist did thump him in the chest. “Yep, you’re a real asshole. That’s what you are.” Ryan turned to look at Damien. “I think we need to get Peaches out of here. We’ll go stay with Ma while we figure out what to do.”
“Sounds like a perfect plan to me. We never did quite fit in here anyway.” Logan couldn’t believe it. He had been friends with these men for years. They were the brothers he never had. Now they were saying they were leaving him, leaving the ranch they had built up together.
“What the fuck do you mean by that? This place is as much yours as it’s mine.”
“No, we’re just the dumbasses who thought we could have it all. We believed we could go on as friends, sharing a wife, the ranch, raising a family together here.” They both turned away from him, long legs taking them out of the kitchen. Fuck! He didn’t know what to say. He didn’t know how to stop them. He wasn’t good with words. He 52
wouldn’t know what to say that wouldn’t just make it all a bigger fucked-up mess. Why the hell hadn’t he left as soon as he saw Peaches?
Logan felt his head swim. A blinding pain flashed through his head. Stumbling back, the world slid away from him down a long, narrow tunnel.
    “Fuck!”

When something as big as Logan moved a table and chairs, the sound made an impression. When it was followed by deafening silence, Peaches pushed past Ryan and Damien as they tried to comfort her. Her heart pounded in her chest as she raced down the stairs, her men close on her heels. They entered the kitchen, gasping collectively as they discovered him unconscious on the kitchen floor. Peaches looked up from where she was huddled on the squeaky orange couch in the waiting room. Ryan sat beside her, holding her hand. He’d had it in a death grip for hours now. Damien was walking toward them. They jumped up, meeting him halfway.
“How is he? Is he going to be all right?”
“Yes. It was a blood clot. It took some work, but they took care of it. He should be out of here in a few days. They want to watch him for a while.”
“It’s my fault,” she said miserably, sniffing away a new bout of tears. “If I hadn’t put him on the floor, he wouldn’t have had to go through this.”
“I asked the doctor about that. He said it may have aggravated the situation, but it’s something that would likely have happened at some point. He pointed out that it was fortunate it happened when someone was there to help him, otherwise he would have died.”
“I guess that makes me feel less guilty.”
“Good. Now, let’s get you home. That storm will be here soon. We’ll have to help out on the ranch until he’s up to taking care of it.”
She looked up at them with wide eyes. “Who’s going to be here when he wakes up? Does he have family? Other than you guys?” They shook their heads. “I’ll stay. You guys go to the ranch.”
Damien shook his head. “We can’t leave you alone here. Who’s going to watch your
