laughed.
âGreat minds think alike.â She wiped her mouth and helped him put the remnants of the food and garbage back into the basket. âThere was a time we used to finish each otherâs sentences.â She met his gaze as if daring him to remember.
He did.
âAnyway, I thought you should finish eating first because this situation isnât pretty. I didnât want you to lose your appetite.â Then Gabrielle launched into a description of Sharonâs past, her unsavory ex-boyfriend, the pornographic pictures and how Sharon had thought it was all behind her. Then Gabrielle finished by explaining that the photographs had resurfaced and Sharon was being blackmailed.
He clenched his jaw, his blood boiling. âWhat kind of scumbag does that to a woman?â
âBeats the hell out of me,â she muttered. âBut not only does Sharon refuse to tell her fiancé about the blackmail but sheâs insisting on dealing with this guy herself.â Gabrielleâs voice rose in pitch. âSheâs going to the Wave tomorrow night to exchange money for photos, if you can believe that!â
âI canât.â
âWell, I said Iâd go with her.â She spoke softly, probably hoping heâd miss that last part.
His hearing was better than sheâd hoped. âThe hell you are. You two have no business handling a blackmailing bastard by yourselves.â
Gabrielle drew a deep breath. âListen, friends donât let friends get blackmailed alone. But youâre right. We shouldnât go by ourselves. Thatâs why Iâd like you to come for backup.â She patted his cheek with her palm.
âYouâre just trying to stroke my ego so Iâll forget Iâm upset with this whole situation.â
âMaybe I am.â She grinned. âAnd youâre much more astute than I gave you credit for. You have to know I canât let her handle this alone.â She paused and arched her brows at him. âBut I have another idea, though.â
He kicked at the sand with his heel. âIâm listening.â
âI thought you and I could do some investigating tomorrow, look up her old boyfriend. Maybe we can head this off. What do you say?â Her eyes were wide and imploring, yet excited at the prospect of doing some digging.
âMy cousin Mikeâs a cop in Boston. Iâll ask him to see what he can find out about Tony DeCarlo.â
âExcellent idea!â She wrapped him in her arms. âThank you!â She tipped her head back and met his gaze.
Her eyes darkened immediately.
His thoughts turned to long hot kisses. But now he was preoccupied with her safety, as well. The fact that Sharon was being blackmailed was bad enough. But Derek hadnât forgotten about Gabrielleâs two threatening incidents, either. He wanted to get to the bottom of everything going on, but since Sharonâs threat was more imminent, heâd start there.
âI really appreciate your help.â Gabrielle released her hold and settled back onto the blanket.
âNot a problem.â
âHey.â She reached out and smoothed his forehead with her hand. âRelax, okay? I didnât want to put you in a bad mood and ruin the whole night, but it was important enough to tell you about.â
He nodded. âIâm glad you trusted me,â he said gruffly.
She smiled. âI do. Now, letâs change the subject.â
He exhaled hard. âThatâs a good idea.â
âSo how much of a grilling did Holly give you about us?â Gabrielle asked, doing a one-eighty.
Reminded of his precocious daughter, he laughed. â Grilling is a good word for it. Sheâs a master interrogator. I told her we dated in high school and broke up before college.â
âAnd she accepted that without asking anything else?â Gabrielle stretched her legs out in front of her and wiggled her toenails, which were
