meant to kick you out like that, but I was watching you fly andââ
âKatieââ
âAnd it reminded me ofââ
âI think about you all the time,â he said, dipping his head to slide his cheek over her hair. âEven when Iâm flying. You should know that.â
âMy fatherââ She stopped abruptly, finally allowing his words to sink in. âWhat?â she whispered. âWhat did you just say?â
He stared at her, shocked at himself. âI think about you too much. Tell me about your father.â
âNo, wait.â Katie had put a hand to her heart, absently rubbing there as if she ached. âThat thinking about me thing. Why canât you just stop thinking about me?â
âIâve tried.â
âYouâre not trying hard enough.â
âDo you want me to stop?â
âYes. No. I donât know! â Her hands fisted in his shirt, probably to push him away, but she held on. âYouâre sidetracking me.â She stared down at her fingers clutching him, and as if she just realized what she was doing, she loosened them and smoothed over the wrinkles sheâd caused. âI came in here to apologize and youâre going to make me forget that, or even why.â
âSorry.â He had no idea what for, but if she wanted to hug him and apologize, who was he to say no? âGo ahead, beg for my forgiveness.â
âFor what?â she asked, annoyed.
âI donât know exactly, but Iâm certainly going to let you do it.â
âBryanâ¦darn it! You ruffle me.â
âYou ruffle me, too. Do it some more.â
âThis is crazy. I canâtâ¦do this. Not with you.â
âBecause of what I do?â
âBecause of who you are. You remind me ofââ
âYour father?â he asked, gently nudging her. âCome on, Katie, open up. Tell me. He hurt you, I know he did, and you never talk about it, itâs not healthy. Itâll make you explode, orââ
âOr cause me to be unnecessarily rude to you?â She let out a smile. âToo late.â
âYou havenât been rude, justâ¦a bit prickly.â
She laughed at that, then set her head on his chest. âIâm so sorry, Bryan, for so many things.â
He didnât need another reason to draw her close, to tuck her body against his and hug her tight. That she let him was a bigger thrill than any flight heâd ever taken. âCome with me.â
âWhere?â
Bless his sweet and totally untrusting Katie. âIf I said to the end of the earth, would you follow me?â
âIâd have to be pretty far gone to do that.â
âSo, will you?â
She hesitated, then let out a rueful laugh. âApparently, yes.â
Smiling, he led her to hangar three. When he walked up to one of his Cessnas, she held herbreath. And when he took her inside, she let the breath out shakily. He strapped her into the copilot seat, sat next to her, put on his sunglasses, and she went more than a little pale.
âTell me weâre just checking out the new leather seats,â she said.
âYep. From twelve thousand feet.â
âOh, my God.â She bit her lower lip. She looked as though she tried really hard to contain a sudden rush of excitement, but he knew her now. Yes, she was afraid, but she was also ready to do this.
âOkay?â he asked.
âOh, sure. Iâm great. Really. Couldnât be better.â She looked nervously out the window.
âNo stunts,â he promised, thinking she shouldnât look so appealing, that it shouldnât be so thrilling to be doing this, with her. âNothing but straight flying, wherever we feel like going.â
âJust like that.â
âJust like that. Spontaneity, sweetheart. It doesnât have to be dangerous.â
Her gaze slid to his mouth and he nearly groaned. âDo
