but I canât live with it. I hope you can accept that.â
Like hell. âYou donât know me very well yet,â he said mildly.
âI meant what I said. I understand you, but I donât have any no intention of taking that understanding any further.â
âBecause of your past.â
âYes.â
âIâm sorry, but thatâs just absurd.â
âButââ
âBut what? All pilots are crazy, wild thrill seekers? No. Some of us value our lives greatly, no matter what you think. Some of us plan to be around for another hundred years.â
âA hundred?â
He had the sudden and ludicrous picture of himself at 130 years old trying to make love to Katie.
Oh, yeah, no doubt, he could do it. He let out a little laugh and she glared at him.
âWhat?â she demanded.
He grinned.
âYouâre thinking of something dirty,â she accused. âI know it.â
âIt was that old-age thing you just laid on me. I was wondering if youâll still want me when weâre really ancient.â
âI donât want you now!â
âOh, sweetheart, donât tell a lie I can disprove with one touch of my mouth to yours. You know you want me, donât you?â
She glared at him as if he were no better than pond scum, which pretty much gave him his answer.

I T WAS THE DAY before Christmas and not a creature was stirring.
Except Katie.
She was more than stirring, she was frantic. Somehow sheâd fallen woefully behind in all her paperwork, not to mention year end preparations.
Somehow.
She knew exactly how. Sheâd wasted the past few weeks making an idiot of herself on a regular basis. Then yesterday sheâd spent most of the afternoon in the air.
In the air.
It gave her a secret thrill even now. It worried her, how sheâd acted. One smile from Bryan and sheâd followed him wherever heâd wanted to go.
So much for being the grown-up, mature one.
The airport was hopping with travelers. The staff watched the clock, and for some reason they all looked so darn merry it drove Katie crazy.
âYou may not have heard,â Julie said halfwaythrough the morning, âbut weâre about to have one of those happy holidays. Lots of hugs and kissing and making jolly. Itâs called Christmas. You might have heard of it?â
âFunny.â
Julie studied her for a moment. âYou need another Christmas party,â she decided. âMore mistletoe.â
When Katieâs head whipped up, Julieâs eyes were sparkling with amusement. âYou could have told me you kissed Santa. I had to hear it through the grapevine. Was it yummy?â
âWho told you?â
âHolly. She saidââ
âDonât tell me.â
ââthat you jumped Santa.â
âOh, my God.â
âDid you really try to kiss him again? Is that how Matt got a concussion?â
Katie closed her eyes and groaned.
âCool!â Julie grinned. âYouâre a goddess among us office women, you know. Weâre all trying to figure out what weâll use at the Valentineâs Day party to kiss whoever we want.â
Katie sighed and bore the moment. But as soon as she was alone again, she picked up the phone and dialed her mother. âHey, Mom. Yes, Iâll bethere tomorrow night for ham, wouldnât miss it. Oh, and, um, Mom? Why didnât you ever marry again?â
Her mother was silent for a full ten seconds. âWell thatâs a loaded question.â
âI know, Iâm sorry,â Katie said quickly. âI donât mean to pry, I know Daddy really destroyed your heartââ
âDamn right he did. No one should die that early.â
âI meant because he was never there for you.â
âWhat on earth ever gave you that idea?â
âWellââ Katie let out a little laugh ââhe was always flying.â
âBecause that
