Clint said.
âI know that, but . . . to accuse him of planning robberies? Thatâs ridiculous.â
âWhy?â
âBecause heâs a businessman.â
âAre you sure?â
âWhat?â
âHave you ever checked to see if heâs really a businessman?â
âWell . . . no.â
âMaybe you should.â
âBased on what?â Hackett asked. âYour suspicions?â
âThe Derby is tomorrow,â Clint said. âDo you really want to take a chance?â
Hackett opened his mouth to answer, then closed it and thought a moment.
âOkay,â he said, âIâll look into it.â
âWhile youâre at it,â Clint said, âyou might want to check on Churchill Downsâ security.â
âI know my job, Adams.â
âYes, all right,â Clint said. âIâm sure you do.â
âSo get lost and let me do it.â
âRight,â Clint said. âOkay.â
He turned and left the office, hoping that the sheriff was serious, and wasnât just trying to humor him.
After Clint Adams left his office, the sheriff went looking for one of his deputies. He was going to need somebody to watch the office for a while.

Fontaine looked at Sheriff Hackett as Gage let him into the house, led him into the living room.
âYouâre not supposed to come here,â he said. âWhat if somebody saw you?â
âNobody did,â Hackett said.
âThis better be important.â
âIt is,â Hackett said. âThe Gunsmith came to see me.â
âAbout what?â
âYou,â Hackett said. âHeâs figured it out, Fontaine.â
âHas he?â
âHe knows youâre gonna hit the Derby.â
Fontaine firmed his jaw.
âWhat did you say?â
âThat Iâd look into it,â Hackett said. âYouâve got to take care of him, Pete. I donât want him coming after me.â
âHe wonât,â Fontaine said.
âAre you sure?â
âItâs already being handled,â Fontaine said, âas we speak. You just get back to town and be ready to do your job.â
âAll right,â Hackett said, âif you say so.â
Gage showed the lawman out, then came back.
âHeâs gonna fold,â Gage said.
âDonât worry,â Fontaine said, âthe unfortunate sheriff is gonna catch a bullet during the robbery. Heâs gonna die a hero.â
âAnd Adams?â
âHeâs just gonna die.â
THIRTY-THREE
Clint went to the nearest saloon for a beer. It turned out to be the saloon where Jesse worked. Heâd forgotten that.
âHey, stranger,â she said, coming up next to him.
It was early, the place was mostly empty, and she wasnât dressed for work. Instead of a brightly colored gown, she wore a simple blue cotton dress.
âHello,â he said, turning to her while holding his beer.
âWhat have you been doing?â she asked. âHavenât seen you in here since last time.â
âIâve been keeping busy,â he told her.
âToo busy to come and see me?â
âIâm sorry.â
âBusy like everybody else?â she asked. âTrying to figure out which horse to bet on?â
âNo,â Clint said, âI know which horse to bet on.â
âHow did you figure that out?â
âLike you said,â he answered. âDisregard all the tips, bet whatâs left.â
âSmart man.â She put her hand on his arm. âIâm not busy now. You wanna come upstairs?â
âMen usually have to pay to go upstairs, donât they?â he asked.
âLike I said,â she replied, rubbing his arm, âIâm not workinâ.â
He studied her for a moment, then said, âAll right.â
âBring the beer,â she said, taking his free hand.
