hanger over her head and turned to inspect herself in the full length mirror making me laugh and roll my eyes.
"Probably because it's yours." Shaking my head I reached into my closet to find something else. The last time I had borrowed that dress from Reece I'd gotten into a fight with Declan at a club over our mother.
Until Mara had popped up out of the blue Declan and I hadn't talked about our blood relatives in years. Skip had died of a heart attack not long after the Cooper's took us in and as far as I was concerned, Mara had been buried with her brother. Like Declan I didn't know who my biological father was and I had little desire to find out. The Cooper's provided me with all the family I needed. And now I had a sister to boot.
“You can’t wear that.” Reece came to my side taking the simple shirt from my hands and hanging it back in my closet. “You’re twenty two years old for God’s sake. Dress like it.” She shuffled through the hangers briefly before grabbing a short black tank and a little flowered skirt to match. Giving me a smug look she immediately began pulling at my clothes making me swat at her.
“I can dress myself, Reece,” I complained even as she ripped the Adrenaline band shirt I was wearing over my head. “I never thought having a sister would be such a pain in the ass,” I mumbled under my breath. Putting my glasses in their case I quickly popped my contacts in and pushed half heartedly at Reece when she continue to dress me.
Reece only laughed as she tugged the skirt over my legs, fussing with my clothes until they looked the way she wanted. Catching my eye roll, she gave me a wink. “Don’t you forget it.” She gave me a swat on the bottom before shuffling me towards the bathroom where my straightener and curling iron were plugged in. “Sit backwards on the toilet. We should have made a thing of this and had Lane and Emma over too.”
I groaned and did as she instructed. “No, we shouldn't have. This is humiliating enough as it is. I should be able to get ready for a date on my own without feeling like I need to put a barf bag in my purse.” I pressed a hand to my stomach feeling it lurch as I anticipated the night’s events.
Reece let her hands fall from where they had been playing in my hair to grab my face. She turned my chin so I was looking at her serious expression. “Kenzie, you should be excited about going out tonight, not sick to your stomach. It’s not too late to cancel. We can just hang out and watch a movie if you want.”
“No I have to do this,” I said and turned back to face the wall.
Reece was quiet for a moment before replying. “Says who, Kenzie? My mom once told me if you’re making a change and it scares you then you shouldn't do it. But if it scares and excites you, then go for it and don't look back. I know you want to get over Jace and I was originally on board with the plan, but I’m not so sure anymore.”
Keeping my eyes focused on the wall I shook my head. “You’re were right before. Tonight is going to be fun. I’m just nervous.” Glancing over my shoulder, I could see the worried look in her eyes and knew I was going to have to do a better job of convincing her. “It’s not like I have to do it again if I don't want to. I promised myself I would give this a try. I intend to follow through.”
“Fine.” Now it was Reece’s turn to roll her eyes. “You Kane’s and your promises. Just the same I’m going to keep my phone on me all night. Text me if you need a fake emergency call to get the hell out of dodge.”
I laughed and gestured for Reece to pick up the curling iron. “Go on and primp me, then get
