was going to work with you?â Robert asked, confusion written all over his face.
âThatâs the plan for right now, and thatâs what weâre going to be sure to tell Zach.â Ethan chuckled and then flat out laughed. âWatch his reaction and then tell me if you notice anythingâ¦unusual about it.â
âEvery reaction from my son has been unusual since the accident. Itâs like I donât even know him anymore.â
Ethan reached out and placed a reassuring hand on Robertâs shoulder. âGive him a little more time. I think after today, weâre finally going to start moving in the right direction. I just need you to trust me and follow my lead.â
âWait, Iâm the one whoâs telling him about you taking over. How am I following your lead?â
âI meant where Gabriella is concerned. Give your speech, and then Iâll sort of chime in and present my plan for the company.â
Robertâs eyes went wide. âPlans? What plans?â
âPlans guaranteed to get Zach back to leading the company before the ink is dry on my contract as interim CEO.â
Robert shook his head and laughed. âYou know, you and my brother should go into business together. Youâre both too sneaky for your own good.â
Ethan smiled. âYeah, but we get results!â
* * *
Thirty minutes later, Ethan sat back uncomfortably. The room was quietâtoo quiet. He and Robert had finally gone to Zachâs house, and Robert had done a majority of the talking. He shared his disappointment in Zachâs behavior toward Gabriella and the fact Zach would put the company at risk by being so abusive toward an employee.
To his credit, Zach hadnât tried to make excuses or defend himself. If Ethan had to guess, heâd say his friend knew what heâd done and wasnât proud of it. No matter what the reason. He just wished one of them would say something. Anything. The silence was starting to freak him out.
Shifting in his seat, Ethan decided if he wanted conversation, he was going to have to start it. âIâm sorry it worked out this way, Zach,â he began sympathetically. âI know this isnât what you want and it wasnât something I was seeking out. Unfortunately, we have a lot going on and thereâs even more we want to accomplish in the coming year. If we donât get moving, weâll lose momentum and miss out on some great opportunities.â
Zach glared at him. âIs Dawn ready to take this on with you? Sheâs not the sharpest tack in the box.â
A smirk begged to cross Ethanâs face, but he kept his expression neutral. âDawn is going to stay on with Summer.â
âSo what are you going to do? Hire a temp? A team of them?â
âActuallyâ¦Gabriellaâs going to work with me. Sheâll be mine now.â He grinned at his choice of words. âI meanâ¦sheâll be my assistant now.â
Robert coughed beside him.
âWhat the hell are you talking about?â Zach demanded.
âWell, considering what you did, and the predicament you currently find yourself in, you donât need her. It only makes sense for her to be with me.â
Zachâs eyes narrowed. âAs your assistant,â he said through clenched teeth.
âYeah.â Ethan leaned forward, his expression serious. âIâm thinking sheâll travel with me this weekend up to Seattle and weâll getâ¦you know, acquainted with one another, and by the time weâre back in the office on Monday, it will be like weâve worked together forever.â
âI thought Summer was going with you?â
Ethan shrugged. âChange of plans.â
âAnd Summerâs all right with that?â
âYes. Thereâs no way we can keep traveling together now that one of us needs to be in the office at all times, soâ¦â He shrugged again.
âWhat the hell
