does that mean?â
âThis situation isnât anyoneâs ideal, Zach. I was looking forward to going back east for a couple of days and checking on the house and just having a little time away with Summer. Obviously, thatâs not going to happen right now. We all have to make sacrifices. Summer will go to North Carolina alone and Iâllâ¦go away with Gabriella.â Ethan almost laughed at the shocked look on Zachâs face.
âFor work ,â Zach growled and then cursed. âWhatever.â
âMaybe itâs all for the best,â Robert said. âNow you can focus on getting your strength back. Gabâ¦I mean, I heard your new therapist already has a schedule in place for you. Do you like him?â
Zach shrugged. âIf he does what he claims he can do, then yeah. Iâm not getting my hopes up.â
âWhy him then?â Ethan asked.
âHe was the first therapist who actually talked with me about what I wanted to accomplish and how I felt about the schedule we were going to need to keep.â He paused. âHe talked to me likeâ¦a man. Not just a patient.â
âItâs definitely a step in the right direction,â Robert said, a smile crossing his face. âWhat else can we do for you? Anything?â
Zach opened his mouth and then immediately shut it. He looked over at Ethan with barely concealed rage.
âRobert, why donât you head out?â Ethan finally said, his eyes never leaving Zachâs.
âYou rode here with me. How are you going to get home?â
âIâll borrow Zachâs car. Iâll get it back to him tomorrow.â He waited for Zach to at least acknowledge what he said and when he saw the slight nod, he turned his attention to Robert. âI just want to stay and hang out for a while.â
Robert hesitated a moment, but got up and wished them both a good night on his way out. Both men waited until the door was closed and they heard the car start.
âYou donât mind my borrowing the Porsche, do you?â
A mirthless chuckle was Zachâs immediate response. âSure, itâs not like I can drive it.â
Ethan stood and went to the kitchen to grab them both a beer. He walked back and handed Zach his. âArenât you tired yet?â
âOf what?â
âOf being a complete tool.â He laughed and took a swig from the bottle. âYou know, I felt bad for you for a good long while. I was sympathetic and I kept encouraging everyone to just give you time. Well, you know what?â
âNo. But Iâm sure youâre going to tell me.â
âThis whole âwoe is meâ crap youâre throwing around is getting old. Iâve known you far too long to believe this is the guy you want to be.â
âThen you donât know shit.â
Ethan sat back down and faced his friend. âWhat are you afraid of?â
âMe? Nothing. Not a damn thing.â
âDonât bullshit me. Itâs insulting to us both.â
Zach sighed loudly. âYou want to know what Iâm afraid of? How aboutâ¦losing my job? Getting stabbed in the back by my best friend? Never being able to walk again? I mean, take your freaking pick, Ethan!â
âOkay, now weâre getting somewhere,â Ethan said, relaxing in his seat with a grin. âLosing your job? Not likely. Itâs still yours, man. Iâm just having to take on some of the tasks you canâtâor wonât âdo. I donât like it any more than you do, so you can stop claiming you were betrayed or stabbed anywhere.â
âI donât know what to do, Ethan,â Zach said wearily after a long moment. âIâm doing exactly what the old man askedâIâm committing to therapy and Iâm doing the business stuff. And I still got the shaft.â
âYou werenât committing to the business stuff and you know it. I donât know what the
