can make. And what better time to praise God than ringing in the New Year. But Calvary doesnât have service tonight, so . . . here I am.â Sara Ann smiled and shrugged, then her brow creased. âAnd I wouldnât have known about Grandma Geri if I hadnât come. Is she scheduled for surgery?â
âSheâs not a candidate for surgeryâitâs too advanced. But she starts chemo on Monday.â
âOh, wow. Iâd like to pray with her.â Sara Ann glanced toward the front of the church. âSheâs got a crowd around her right now. Iâll drop by tomorrow.â
âThat sounds great, Sara Ann,â Janelle said. âI know sheâd appreciate it.â
Kory thought about what sheâd said as Sara Ann left. âSo your grandmotherâs chemo starts Monday? That must be hard for you . . . I assume you have to head back to Maryland this weekend?â
Tiffany wheeled around with a puzzled look. âBut we just got here.â
Now Kory looked puzzled.
âI decided to stay with Grandma and help take care of her for a few months,â Janelle explained. âWe went home and packed up more stuff.â
âThatâs awesome, Janelle. Youâre really something.â
âItâs not as selfless as you might think. I thought the change of scenery might be good for me.â
It was dawning on him. âSo weâre practically neighbors.â
She allowed a slight smile. âThat kinda sorta crossed my mind as well.â
âAnd you know what else that means?â
âWhat?â
He stepped closer to the girls and held a finger atop each head, pointing downward. He whispered, âThese two are practically neighbors.â
She whispered back, âI wonder if they know.â Janelle moved between them. âTiffany, Dee, did you know you live near one another now?â
Deeâs eyes got wide. âYou live here now?â She turned to her father. âDaddy, can I spend the night at Tiffanyâs? Iâve never had a sleepover before. Please, Daddy?â
âWhoa, sweetheart.â He looked into her pleading eyes. âTiffany wonât disappear tomorrow. Youâll have plenty of time to play with her.â
âBut I want to go to her house tonight .â
Kory gave her the look. âDee, no whining. Itâs late and weâre heading home.â
Janelle moved closer to him and spoke so only the two of them could hear. âSheâs welcome, you know. Sheâs never done a sleepover?â
âNever.â
âYou trust her with us?â
âCome on, Janelle.â Kory would trust her with his own life. âBut she has no clothes or anything.â
Janelle gave Dee a once-over. âLooks like sheâs wearing clothes to me.â She smiled. âLet her go with us.â
âYouâre sure?â
âPositive.â
He approached Dee with a grave expression. âMiss Janelle just informed meânow donât get upset or anythingâthat itâs okay for you to go home with them tonight.â
Dee flung her arms so tight around his waist he was knocked a step back. âOh, Daddy, thank you, thank you!â She looked back at Janelle. âThank you, Miss Janelle.â
He felt the moment to his core. Heâd come tonight to coat the pain, but God had given so much moreâthat sparkle he saw right now in his daughterâs eyes. Heâd been praying for a friend for Dee, and never in a million years would he have thought it would be the daughter of Janelle. He couldnât ask for a better influence. And that he might see Janelle more often because of their daughtersâ friendship . . . He could think of worse things.
