do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.â Then he had led them through an exercise where heâd given several scenarios of what they might have gone through this past year, ending each one with, âBut Iââand the congregation filled in the blankââpress!â
âI know some of yâall think Iâm too young to know what it means to have to press.â He leaned over the podium. âBut believe me when I say Iâve been through some things . . .â
Kory saw his gaze flitter to the section with Janelle and Libby.
âPress, saints. Donât live in the past. Donât let it stop you from living the abundant life Jesus died to give you today. Press on.â
The organist struck up a few chords.
âAnd you know what the organ means,â Pastor Travis said. âHow many seconds do we have?â
âTwenty!â somebody shouted.
âStand to your feet and letâs count down.â
Kory felt the energy around him as voices rose and the organ played.
â. . . 18, 17, 16 . . .â
He felt his own energy rising within. He didnât have to focus on what happened a year ago. He could press forward.
â. . . 10, 9, 8 . . .â
Thank You, Jesus. Thank You, Jesus, for Your peace .
âDaddy, itâs almost here!â
Kory picked her up as the cheers rang out. âHappy New Year, sweetheart!â
Dee threw her arms around his neck. âHappy New Year, Daddy!â She watched people spilling out of the pews to hug those around them. She squirmed to get down. âCan I go say hi to Tiffany?â
Kory glanced in Janelleâs direction, but couldnât see her or her children with all the mingling. âSure, sweetheart.â
âWill you go with me?â
He felt awkward. He didnât want Janelle to think heâd shown up hoping to run into her. Sheâd been hesitant about being friends and certainly hadnât reached out to him yet. He didnât want to push.
âDaddy, come on.â
Dee started across the aisle, pulling him along. One thing was sure. He was glad Tiffany had brought his daughter out of her shell. Heâd been praying for Dee to find a friend like that in Rocky Mount.
Dee moved through the crowd, finally spotting her quarry. She touched Tiffanyâs back, and Tiffany squealed when she turned around. âDee!â They embraced like old friends.
Janelle turned, her eyes warm. âHey. I didnât know youâd be here.â
âSame here. I thought you left a few days ago.â
She looked beautiful as alwaysâgorgeous brown skin, beautiful hairâbut it was the beauty that radiated from her soul that captivated him from the beginning. Since everyone was hugging around them, he gave her a quick one too. âHappy New Year.â
She returned it easily. âHappy New Year, Kory.â
They exchanged an amused glance as Tiffany and Dee started in on what theyâd gotten for Christmas. Both girls had several pigtails, but Kory could see that Tiffanyâs hair was much better styled. He had a long way to go in the hair department.
âI was sorry to hear about Grandma Geri,â Kory said.
Janelle nodded. âIt was a shock to all of us.â
âI was just coming to say that, how shocked I am.â Sara Ann had walked up beside them.
âHey, Sara Ann,â Janelle said. âI donât know if you remember Kory.â
Sara Ann smiled. âI remember pushing your daughter on the swing.â She shook his hand and said hello to the girls.
âDo you always come to Watch Night Service?â Janelle asked her.
âIâve come the last three years. Because I work at the diner, I miss a lot of Sunday services. But on New Yearâs Eve the dinerâs closed, and it hit me one year, hey, thatâs a service you
