her own good, but that didnât make him feel better about lying to her.
She popped the pills into her mouth and washed them down.
âYou say youâre a friend of my sisterâs?â
âWe came down to look for you after we heard about the earthquake.â
Leahâs eyes went wide. âNicoleâs here?â
âNot here, but sheâs ⦠uh ⦠close.â Chase had no idea where Nicole was. If they hadnât heard about the Rossis being in Lago, they were probably in Puebla by now.
âI must be dreaming,â Leah said.
Chase tried to explain, but it was difficult because he didnât want to tell her about the hurricane and losing herhome. She had enough to worry about. When he finished his abridged story, she asked for another drink of water and seemed to be thinking about what he had told her. She turned her head and looked at her mother.
âHow is she?â
âSheâs ⦠uh ⦠sedated.â
Leah nodded. âWe need to get her to a hospital. What are the chances of us getting out of here?â
âNot real good at the moment. Thereâs only one road in and itâs impassable.â
âThen how did you get here?â
âI climbed over the trucks jammed in the gap. I wouldnât want to do that again.â
âI bet. So your friend Tomás is from here, and you two split up.â
âRight. We ran into a landslide, and I went ahead on a quad to find a way around the slide.â He hadnât mentioned that he had gotten hit in the head and had everything stolen, including the quad. âTomás is Arturoâs brother.â
âOur Arturo?â
Chase nodded.
âAnd Nicole is with your dad on the way to Puebla.â
âOr on their way back here if they got word that you and your mother are in Lago.â He hadnât mentioned Cindy and Mark. That was way too complicated, and he wasnât sure he understood why they were here himself.
âIâm still confused,â Leah said. âActually Iâm shocked. Itâs not like my dad or my grandmother to let Nicole miss schooland her swimming. Weekends are out too. Sheâs a lifeguard at the local pool.â
Chase hadnât known Nicole was a lifeguard, but he wasnât surprised. He wished heâd never started this conversation. His mother would have called it a trie â not quite the truth, but not exactly a lie. Nice trie , she used to tell him.
âI know most of Nicoleâs friends,â Leah continued. âI donât think Iâve ever met you.â
Here we go , Chase thought. âI just moved to Palm Breeze.â
âWhy would your dad drop everything and come down here to help us?â
âActually he came down here to help Tomás and his family. It just turned out you were down here too. I guess it was fate.â
âFate, huh?â
Chase shrugged.
âWhat does your dad do for a living?â
âHe â¦â Chase hesitated. âHe rescues people.â
âThatâs a job?â
âHe used to be a Navy SEAL.â Chase wasnât even sure this was true. âLook, your dad said youâd be shocked when Nicole showed up down here. He said to tell you that Momma Rossi was convinced that Nicole had to come with us or bad things would happen.â
Leah smiled for the first time. âYou should have started with that,â she said. âWhat else did Momma Rossi have to say?â
âNot much,â Chase answered, relieved, and wanting badly to keep the smile on Leahâs face. âShe was a little distracted because of Petâs calf.â
âPet had her baby! Tell me about it!â
Chase described the birth, leaving out anything having to do with the hurricane. Leahâs smile broadened with each detail.
âDad must have been frantic!â
Chase was certain Marco Rossi had been beyond frantic, considering heâd been trying to
