her sometime.â
Grady sat down and dug into his meal before the rest of them could get a plate. âWhy not tonight?â
Without Mackâs even asking, Natasha added a second piece of garlic bread to his plate, and Rod pretended he didnât notice that whatever Mack received from Natasha was always the biggest and the best.
âDylâs getting home soon,â Cheyenne replied. âSo I should head out.â
âHave him join us,â J.T said. âHe hardly ever comes over these days.â
Rod suspected Anyaâs presence had a great deal to do with that. Dylan liked her even less than the rest of them did.
âCanât,â she said. âHe has a baseball game.â
âWe should go watch him play,â Anya suggested, but no one chimed in to encourage her.
Rod put Kellan down to accept his plate. âThanks.â Since he wanted to speak to Cheyenne in private before she left, he hoped she wasnât going to rush off.
âHowâs your hand?â She nodded toward his cast.
âThrobbing like crazy,â he admitted.
âI made that apple crisp you like for dessert.â She winked. âMaybe thatâll help ease the pain.â
He leaned over to drop a kiss on her forehead. âDylan got lucky the day he married you.â
âThatâs what I keep telling him,â she teased.
âWill Aaron be at the game, too?â Mack asked.
âShould be,â she told them. âDyl talked him into joining the team.â
Mack got up to get a beer and grabbed one for Rod, too. âWant to go over to the park?â he murmured so Anya and the others couldnât hear.
Normally, Rod wouldâve enjoyed seeing the game. But after being up so late, and everything heâd dealt with today, he was ready for bed. âNot tonight.â
Cheyenne put the dessert on the counter and started cleaning the spatula and serving spoons. âIâll leave the rest of this here,â she said, indicating the leftover salad, lasagna and bread. âJust remember to take the dishes to Dylan tomorrow so he can bring them home.â
âI will,â Rod said.
She swung her son into her arms. âIâd better get going. I want to make sure Dyl has a chance to eat before he has to show up at the field.â
Rod wasnât finished with his supper, but he stood. âIâll walk you out,â he said so the others wouldnât find it odd when he left the kitchen after only a few bites.
He caught up with his sister-in-law at the front door. âBefore you go, could you do me a favor?â
She turned in surprise. âOf course.â
âWill you take a second to come up and look in my closet?â
âWhat for?â she asked.
He lowered his voice to make sure no one else could hear. Fortunately, they were all so busy eating, he didnât think anyone was paying attention. âI have a date tomorrow.â
âAnd you want me to tell you what to wear? This girl must be special,â she said. âYouâve never asked for my help with that kind of thing before.â
Heâd never felt so out of his element before. âSheâs...different.â
âSpecial,â she confirmed with a grin. âDo I know her?â
He scratched his neck. âItâs our new neighbor.â
âOh!â Her smile widened. âWhy didnât you speak up a second ago?â
âItâs one date,â he said with a shrug.
âBut youâd like to impress her.â She wasnât buying his nonchalance.
âI need to dress up a little, thatâs all,â he said. âHer husbandâthe man who passed awayâwas a heart surgeon.â
âI see,â she responded. âSo weâre going for sophisticated and respectable.â
At least Cheyenne seemed to be catching on to what he needed. âYeah. That sounds good.â
She put down her son and linked her arm
