doesn’t know the meaning of the word love. Surely you know that by now?’
Chloe was relieved that at that moment the taxi drew up outside the house, and she was able to escape up to her room. It was obvious that Livia felt antagonistic towards her, but she couldn’t imagine why. Livia wasn’t the one being humiliated and disciplined. She was the one sharing Carlos’s bed and most private thoughts. If anything, it should be Chloe resenting Livia.
Putting the other girl’s words to the back of her mind, she started thinking about the dinner party, and what it would be like to see Mike again.

CHAPTER
    11

I t was seven-twenty, and Chloe was just checking herself in the mirror when she heard a light tap at the bedroom door. Guessing that it was Livia, coming to run a critical eye over her appearance, she murmured a weary ‘Come in,’ and then continued studying her reflection.
‘Very nice,’ said Carlos approvingly. ‘A little more modest than I’d expected, but highly suitable for an ex-nun.’
Chloe turned to look at him. ‘You like it then?’
He nodded. ‘Yes. Livia told me she’d had problems with you, but I think you made a good choice. Sometimes it’s more erotic to reveal only a little of yourself at the beginning of an evening.’
Chloe, who had no intention of revealing more of herself at any stage, was elated. So much for Livia’s expertise. ‘I’d hardly call this revealing very little of myself,’ she said with a laugh. ‘When I move, this dress is split to the thigh on one side.’
Carlos nodded. ‘True, but you’re wearing tights under it. Bare legs would have been sexier. Never mind. I wanted to make a suggestion to you. Some of tonight’s guests might well be interested in your charity. You must see if you can persuade them to make donations.’

‘I couldn’t possibly!’ exclaimed Chloe in horror. ‘Not tonight, it’s a social occasion. They’d think me very rude.’
He gave a half-smile. ‘That rather depends on how you try to persuade them. They might enjoy it. Think about it, Chloe. Now I must go and join my guests. I hope tonight is fun for you.’
As he closed the door behind him, Chloe tried not to think about what Carlos might have meant by his suggestion. Taking a deep breath, she sprayed on some Arpège, which she’d bought that afternoon, and went to join him and his guests.
Everyone was gathered in the study, chattering away loudly, but as Chloe walked in, their voices slowly stopped and they all turned to look at her. Feeling incredibly self-conscious, she walked across the thick carpet to where Carlos was waiting by the drinks cabinet. ‘I hope I’m not late,’ she murmured.
‘Not at all. What would you like to drink?’
‘Bacardi and Coke, please.’ His blue eyes locked on to her grey ones and for a few seconds it felt as though they were the only two people in the room, then he put a hand on her shoulder and guided her towards his guests.
‘Livia, make Chloe her drink, please. Chloe, I want you to meet Natasha and Christopher. Christopher lived in Brazil for a few years, it’s where we met.’
Christopher, who looked as though he probably had some Brazilian blood in him, quickly started asking Chloe questions about her time in Rio de Janeiro, questions which she tried to avoid because the last thing she wanted to do at this stage of the evening was mention that she’d once been a nun.
Natasha was a pretty, auburn-haired young girl, wearing a brown leather dress that clung to her body like a second skin. A zip ran down the front of the dress, and it had twofastenings. The bottom one was open to just below her crotch and the top one was pulled down to reveal the tops of her small but beautifully rounded creamy breasts.
When Livia brought Chloe’s drink over, she also brought another couple with her, introducing them as Verity and Anthony. It seemed difficult for Anthony to take his eyes off Natasha, which surprised Chloe because Verity was
